People were expecting there to be rational reasons for why the island had these electromagnetic properties, what this funny smoke machine was, etc. And then they were like "HURR DURR THE BLACK SMOKE IS ACTUALLY A MAN IN ANOTHER FORM, WHO REPRESENTS ALL THE EVIL IN THE WORLD". Another avenue of understanding LOST better is also to read a lot of books (some that are directly referenced in the show, some just implied). LOST is almost a love letter to books and is the most literary inspired show in existence.
Ones I’d recommend are The Magus, Overlords of War, Slaughterhouse 5, The Third Policeman, Lord of the Flies, and Atlas Shrugged. Those have some very obvious thematic and even narrative elements that are close to LOST and will make you appreciate it more. Those are just a few though. I’m still finding LOST inspirations to this day. I’ve gotten into esoteric stuff like Hermeticisn or the writings of Ossendowski and Saint-Yves recently, and I’m finding a lot of inspirations for LOST in these explorations of the soul and humanity.
