You definitely are either remembering with rose colored glasses or you were too stupid to realize he was absolutely destroying the right and none of it was kind hearted or forgiving.

What made it funny, though, was the same thing that made Ron Swanson funny: truth. Ron Swanson was supposed to be a caricature of libertarians, intended to mock them. But he ended up being a funny and beloved character who has essentially been adopted as the mascot for libertarianism. This is because he was actually just an extreme version of an actual libertarian, so people could relate to him because he believed what they believed, only he took it further in order to create comedy.

The same was true for Colbert. His character was not created in good faith, it was intended to be a complete mockery of conservatives. But people ended up loving the character because, like Swanson, he represented their true beliefs, simply taking them to an extreme, which made it funny. But the fact that conservatives actually enjoyed the character is totally against the intentions of Colbert himself.

A similar thing happened moe recently in the Solo movie. The SJW robot was meant to be a sincere representation of the left, but it ended up being seen as a mockery of the left because the left's ideas are so fucking ridiculous.
