Alright people awake at this ungodly hour and fellow ausfags let’s talk Motorball. This commentary and speculation is based off the rules provided by Ido’s journal, and what we actually see occur on screen. I’m going to focus on the ‘cut-throat’ version of the game since it’s what we see in-movie (at least with Alita’s trial, though I think the game she goes to also has individual scoring since we get a brief glimpse of a leader-board at one point.)
Under the rules of cut-throat it’s a free for all, with the winner being the one who accrues the most points by the end of the two sets of ten-lap games (this is assuming the standard rules provided by Ido’s journal.) You can score points in three ways: (1) point for passing a red ring with possession of the ball. There are (3) rings per lap. You get (2) bonus points if you pass it through all three rings in a lap (meaning you score 5 total points that lap). Finally, you score a bonus (5) points if you cross the finish line with the Motorball. Theoretically a perfect game and score is therefore 55 points, though this is hugely unlikely. The important takeaway from this is that you should always try to possess the ball to cross the final lap no matter what, and that you’re much better off having one great lap where you get all three rings and two mediocre ones where you only get one ring (for a total of 7 points) than three laps of two rings each (6 points). With this in mind, I would like to move on to the construction of Motorball bodies for a moment. Assuming a Motorball body is within the rules outlined in pic related, it should broadly adhere to three points of construction.

Especially in free for all games, it is highly likely that the cyborg body the Motorball player has will be seriously battered. It is vital that the body can either take hits or avoid them altogether. As is always the case, there is a necessary sacrifice made between speed and durability, especially given that there are regulations on the power produced by skates. As smaller humanoid bodies have greater flexibility when it comes to varied situations, it is likely that for cut throat games the more specialised heavy-bodied cyborgs are at a disadvantage.
>2. Maintaining Possession/Defence
To win by scoring points, possession must be maintained through the aforementioned rings. Here the challenge of cut-throat Motorball is shown. Since the Motorball itself weights 40kg, holding it will naturally slow a player down compared to those chasing them. Therefore, the player must be able to either avoid or fight off attacks, ranging from basic grabs all the way to the dubiously-legal grindcutters (no projectiles obviously). In order to do so, one could rely on pure speed or evasion, or one can have reactive weaponry (such as Jashugan’s gauntlets). Here there is an arguments for sightly heavier cyborg bodies with lower centres of gravity, as being knocked over and thus losing procession is a clear problem for many of the players with the ball seen throughout the film. Indeed, a non-bipedal design may help immensely here, though it would conversely be much more vulnerable to striking weapons given its relative immobility.

This comes in two parts. Being able to catch the leader, and then take the ball from them. Here the wide range of weaponry comes in to play. Weapons which can be wielded without the loss of use of a limb are likely helpful for the sake of flexibility, though they will necessarily be smaller than those strapped to a limb. A player can entirely forsake weaponry too, relying only on the abilities of the body to reclaim possession. This may be difficult in a team game with specialised roles but seems much more viable in cut-throat. Finally, a non-bipedal design allows for some unique weapons such as the mace during Alita’s trial compared to the fairly limited weapons available to a convensional cyborg body.
It should also be noted that one can win games in theory by destroying the cyborg bodies of all other competitors and then taking the win by default, though this risks overloading on offensive power and subsequently having no back up plan should the players escape from the attempts to incapacitate them. Furthermore, with pit crews and replacement bodies it seems like this strategy would be more viable in lower leagues where the quality of equipment is lower than in the higher leagues.

However, what surprises Ido is that EVERYONE in the trial apart from Alita is either a bounty hunter or genuine criminal as well. So it's clearly not the factory practice team entirely, even if there's a bit of overlap.

Yes, I honestly can't see there being enough time in one movie to jam that much plot in there. I hope that they don't fall to scourge of Japanese movies of anime/manga: Making it fan-service for existing fans and trying to put too many nods in there. They did well with the first movie, and if Clive Lee is in the second one, he might play a rather different role - while staying true to character. McTeague was well liked too, I think - but maybe less is more with him.

right all around. ‘less is more’ is huge for something like this. james is a master of this in my opinion. for instance the future war scenes in terminator are short but compelling, making you want so much more. but 40 more minutes of future war would’ve diluted the ultimate product into something closer to boilerplate sci-fi. the moon battle scene in alita gave me that same feeling. (yes rob directed but it was all based on jimnotes and he purposely emulated his style)
