Even though Japan has produced the most amount of high quality cinema, I'm going to suggest stuff from other countries just for variety. For anons wanting some jap recommendations, try:
Ugestu (1953) dir Mizoguchi
Tokyo Story (1953) dir Ozu
Dreams (1990) Kurosawa
im going to watch these later
Sailor Suit and machine gun
Typhoon club
>Sailor Suit and machine gun
good taste. I recommend Lady Snowblood
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is pure kino
"Lust, Caution" by Ang Lee
Agreed. You should check out Touch of Zen if you liked CT,HD
thanks, I'll watch it
Obligatory recommendation Memories of Murder (2003). Korean kino
>he enjoys the films of Seijun Suzuki
they're trash but so enjoyable.
Have you seen Thin Ice, Black Coal? It almost supplants MoM.
mirai was the finest film of the year along with first man
Ice Black, Thin Coal is good, but not on the same level as MoM. I'm not sure if China has a film like MoM that compares. Much like Korea has nothing that compares to something like Ashes of Time
Good movie.
good taste user. I recommend Departures (2008)
I wonder if jap actors get tired of playing the bad guys in every historical Chinese and Korean film.
Their armor/uniforms were cool af though
They probably long to return to the imperial days
i'll add it to the list
If you guys want a classic Hong Kong thriller, watch Fallen Angels (1995). Most have already seen it but if you haven't its kino
>Song of the Exile (1990)
I'm also looking for more films like this. Similar aesthetic. If its in Mandarin thats a plus. Would love some recommendations of contemporary asian film. Not sure whats circulating at the international festivals these days
I hated this while recognizing its quality. One of the best endings I've seen too. I don't know why I just couldn't stand the film. It felt like it was lecturing me for some reason. I'll have to give it a rewatch
It's probably because the mother is presented as such an insufferable person, both past and present, but then are expected to empathize with her. Which I do, but regardless, I understand your frustrations.
>Lady Vengeance (2005)
>Comrades: Almost a Love Story (1996)
Give me recommendations for post-1990s crazy/wacky asian films
So far I've seen
>You Shoot, I Shoot (2001)
>Survive Style 5+ (2004)
>Ebola Syndrome (1996)
>Ichi the Killer (2001)
>Tokyo Decadence (1992)
>Love Exposure (2008)
>Versus (2000)
>Ricky, the Story of Riki-oh (1991)
and some of the works of
>Wong Kar-wai
>Park Chan-wook
>Takashi Miike
>Takeshi Kitano
>Sion Sono
The Good, The Bad and the Weird is a good popcorn flick with extreme violence.
This has a very dreamlike atmosphere to it. Great, meditative movie. It also has a 40+ minute single shot halfway through, but the first half is still entrancing as well.
This one was disappointing after Oldboy. Saw it today for the first time. I have Sympathy for Mr Vengeance on hand as well and hear it’s even worse.
CUTE!
What did everyone think of Shoplifters? I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Is he /ourguy/?
Unironically yes
crouching tiger hidden dragon. literally best fight scene since They Live piper vs black guy in an alley.
>asian?
SABU!
That dude is a light-hearted, chinese Tarantino (or just post-modern shit in general) mixed with Kitano, but watch Drive, Monday, and Postman-Blues--- all wacky as hell.
the director and all his characters are based
>no tampopo
Are you guys all too cool for school?
>Ebola Syndrome
Exploitation kino. Fact.
Caught the Twilight Samurai recently. Nice to see a relatively recent Samurai film that doesn't emphasise action at all. I'd recommend for those than enjoy comfy yet somewhat depressing period dramas.
probably not what OP had in mind but this shit fucking wrecked me
I recently watched the documentary Our Time, Our Story on the Criterion streaming thing about the New Taiwan Cinema movement. Any other good Asian film docs?
MDYD-433
any movie that has Simon Yam playing a triad member.
here this white cuck looking guy reviewing asian movies.
I'll see your Red Lantern and raise you one the Blue Kite
ChungKing Express feels like the correct follow up for this film, even though they are not much related in tone.
may as well stop pretending and just watch "chinese hoes love glory holes" by alina lee
Where my Hong Sang-Soo lovers at? He is one of the last directors left that has a truly recognizable style to him and most of his most recent movies where really good. I recommend Right Now, Wrong Then as an entry point
Alice in Earnestland
Spider Forest 2004, there is no other asian movie like this.
