I'm from China. Our cinema is awful. We used to make good cinema in the 1990s like 大红灯笼高高挂 and 霸王别姬 (Farewell my concubine and raise the red lantern) but now we only make trash. The actual answer for why it's not spaceships is because the author says so, but in practice spaceships would never work indefinitely because you need parts for maintenance, fuel and so on which you lack the materials to make in space.

Yes it's a loophole in the movie. Jupiter has a "gravitational spike" which was not calculated, but this doesn't exist and never happened in the book.

And they pace it very poorly. It's really just an ice road truck trip with some big engine core restarter. So it's mostly about navigating frozen cities, where there's zero suspense because there's no room for them to avoid any falling ice from skyscrapers due to the streets being so narrow. They just drive and ice falls where it will and they get lucky not to get hit. But of course they wouldn't, because that would end the movie.

I watched it, it's a real strange bird of a movie. Some parts were pretty interesting, other bits had me groaning, particularly all the bullshit with Jupiter and these mysterious "gravity spikes" which were never explained. I suppose the rocket men could fuck the math up but it's not likely they would accidentally Earth into Jupiter, whoops, lmao, OUR BAD. then destroying the ship with all the information needed to restart humanity somewhere, and they waste it all in some crazy effort to maybe save a totally fucked tomb world.

I was awake when I watched the movie. I understand the concept. It was still pretty stupid. There's no reason they have to get Earth really close to Jupiter to use it's gravity. And it's unlikely the drives cutting out for a few hours would result in inevitable collision.

The entire idea was just wacky as hell, I mean I rolled with it because that's the premise, but they never addressed how the planet was meant to survive the journey and not lose all it's atmosphere and everyone underground reverting into weird primitives over aeons.

I'd give it a 5/10, completely mediocre, does what it sets out to do and on par with stuff like Armageddon and Day After Tomorrow.
