Their destitute population? Outdated military that barely works? Russia is a third world country outside of Moscow and a handful of cities.

ITS NOT FAIR COMRADES
Asking in this thread as well, what about Fukushima? Is there any kino potential there? How is it compared to Chernobyl
Only if Godzilla is in the movie.
Yes, but that's not what causes neutron radiation. The neutron radiation is blasted onto the patient who had the boron injected in them (in combination with a tumor-localizing drug), and that boron then emits alpha particle radiation onto the cancer cells when it is blasted by neutron radiation.
> "Guess I'll be glowing in the dark heh heh!"
Fukushima feels like a low budget remake.
No heroic shoveling of reactor fragments, no thousands of extras, just a handful of nips pretending everything is fine.
Yeah, the inject the boron into the tumor, shoot it with neutrons, the boron then emits alpha particles that fuck up the tumor
that was a pretty slow meltdown, the hydrogen explosions were the most climactic part
The previews for this look good. How is the show?
first episode was great, future episodes promise lots of good body horror and existential fear
OH NONONONONONONO
>body horror and existential fear
Wonderful. I can't wait to start watching.
Is that really a radiation risk, the effective distance would only be a few microns if that?
why is anyone still living on that shitty island on a tectonic seam full of volcanos and fuck all natural resources
Fukushima didn't have as big of a meltdown because they were able to have some forewarning and safety measures in place, but the overall feeling of tension they must've had before the tsunami hit and then afterwards once the coolant systems started to fail, and then seeing the reactor fail, and having all sorts of crazy recovery/repair attempts under-irradiated-water could definitely make for a kino movie or show. Chernobyl is still more kino though because of the higher magnitude of danger and also because it was the first time in human history such a thing had happened (officially).
>building backup generators at sea level
What brainlet came up with that idea?
Probably just your yearly dose of radiation or something like that.
Reminder
sneak peek from the next episode
animals mutating like crazy
>the pay was so good compared to their day jobs they performed tasks in highly irradiated areas (only allowed to be on reactor roof for 40 seconds in full protective gear) multiple times
>workers drank vodka to fool radiation screening (alcohol dehydration on cellural level = less SV reading)
>only supposed to go into the rad hellhole once per person and only for a few minutes
Communism™
Because fuck you and fuck Gaia right in her slut pussy
Fukushima should not have been evacuated, there is no risk.
Literally nothing dangerous with radioactivity. And that sarcophagus they built to shield me is just unnecessary money spent by the government. And now this TV show will tell lies.
Based Jared Harris kino
it's not even a shield, just a big lid to stop the corium blowing in the wind any further than it already did
and to keep the rain out so it doesnt react with radioactive cesium
new safe confinement isn't a rad shield either, just a better replacement for the rotting sarcophagus
>And that sarcophagus they built to shield me
His voice is 10/10
Well there are people working inside the sarcophagus, and they seem to be fine. Can't imagine someone thousands of miles away is at any risk.
why do americans like the irish again
t. pic
yes comrade i'm only picking up a 3.6
Fukushima's problems are mostly location based, if it were several miles inland, there would be little to no issue.
Are there any other power engineers in here? Can we turn this into a cute boiler thread?
Why aren't people going there to loot shit? Probably lots of cash and valuables to be found.
It's basically a double edged sword
If it were built far from the sea, that's the ideal way to do it
It's just the japs couldn't make a creative decision through all that bureaucratic bs to save their lives (literally)
About to start on HBO
Samurai fear no one, except radiation
there's probably also a really severe jail sentence if you're caught
and also japan's culture of respect probably says something against looting a disaster area
mainly though ingrained fear of radiation from the two nukes, I think
>poking a Pu core with a screwdriver
I'm not sure that says anything about the dangers of nuclear power. How about poking a grizzly bear with a screwdriver?
How many siverts, comrades?
Last two digits (with a decimal) are the radiation levels at the Vladimir I. Lenin Nuclear Power Plant.
it's the 40s, nobody knew what they were fucking with, plus men were Men back then, even the nerds were more chad than you'll ever be
there were concerns the atrmosphere might catch on fire during Trinity Test, but they went ahead with it anyway.
not great
not terrible
>Asking in this thread as well, what about Fukushima?
The accident, ??
Only retarded Japanese acting like retarded japanese
-- hey look the power is out and back up generators are smashed,,
--The automatic cooling system is not working and we could be losing cooling / containment so we have a serious problem !!!
but lets not tell anyone that could save it / us because that would embarrass our bosses.
cores drain dry -- hydrogen explosions
Before the actual accident with the Demon Core, I believe Oppenheimer called the reckless experiments conducted with it "tickling the tail of a sleeping dragon" or somesuch, so it's not like they were doing it out of the lack of information, they really were just stupid
'bout tree fiddy
Lies. It is 3.6
Go to the infirmary
Checkpoints and such would make that difficult, and most people don't want a radioactive PS3.
Also not many melanin enriched individuals in Japan.
Oppenheimer was a pretty cool guy, extremely well educated, justifiably terrified of just what they were building
>US plants even has external hookups for a truck generator just in case
Jap's are fucking idiots.
i'm just shocked they decided to build plants in a very unstable quake region. but i guess the energy is worth the risk
AHH THE FRENCH
They also got insurance for their plants .
Except that insurance contract specifically did not cover damage from earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions.
That insurance company, DKVG, coincidentally owned a 10% share in TEPCO and had their man on the board of directors beforehand.
I hope Chernobyl ruins shows like Walking Dead for people since all those Power Plants would've had a meltdown by now.
I absolutely love this series. It's so good damn kino.
The lighting
The sound editing
The acting and special effects
The music and crackle of Geiger counter being used interchangeablely.
This is almost perfect cinematography.
The risk with new reactor designs is that operators may become so confident, they decide to keep the reactor running through a major incident, such as station blackout. US regulations strictly prohibit this, but people in other countries are asshats.
Unlikely, modern plants designed so that if a reactor is left completely unattended for a certain period, they shut down automatically. Although I do wonder what the power plant procedure in a zombie apocalypse would be. They'd keep putting out electricity for the survivors at least until the plant itself was overrun.
Why is it glowing blue
ionizing radiation
Cherenkov radiation. Happens when the charged particles emitted by the reactor move faster through a medium than the phase velocity of light.
cherenkov
When will this meme end? Japan had 54 nuclear reactors prior to the disaster, only one site suffered catastrophic meltdown and it could've been easily prevented by not sticking the backup generators in the basement. There are even other similar plants right on the coast (classic example is Fukushima Daini) that did not go out of control.
Cherenkov effect. Perfectly normal even with low level radiation. Go to the infirmary.
don't forget to mention the best part: no niggers
Cant wait for episode 2 desu. Havent been this into a show somceince The Terror or TD S1 before that. Kino levels maxing out at 200 sieverts.
>Unlikely, modern plants
You seem to be implying all the nuclear power plants in the world are modern. Pretty sure there might be a couple in the US or Canada that are old. What about Mexico? What about Europe? enough of them go off, it is kaputnik.
what the fuck was maester luwin's problem?
COMRADE

That makes him ~15 when Lenin was in power

You know that feeling on your skin that you get when you have lots of soapbubbles on it? It's like millions of tiny bubbles popping and rearranging all across the surface of your skin? And hearing that slight fuzzy sound of all the bubbles popping?
Yeah radiation poisoning is like that but inside your body with your organs.
He did nothing wrong. He just acted on wrong information given to him, so it wasn't his fault.
>if it were just a low radiation level, it would be fine keeping the entire city in the dark and secluded, sending the army over and trying to cover it up
I wonder why the USSR went to shit
You have ten seconds to explain why you aren't pumping water into the core right now.
he did nothing wrong except having faith in communist doctrine
He was a True Believer.
Why are a bunch of chefs manning a nuclear power plant?
Why do their faces turn red?
To be honest, I'm not even sure if it's exclusive to modern plants. There's no precedent to this sort of situation so I've no idea how old plants were designed to deal with a sudden and unexpected absence of human intervention.
They’re being cooked unironically.
They're so embarrassed for even thinking that an RBMK could explode
>mfw gomunism
mfw the air is glowing
I'm just sure something would go wrong with one somewhere. I know for a fact gas mains would be exploding left and right and the cities would be either on fire or already burned to the ground. fucking post apoc settings where nothing happened but people crashing their cars into shit.
how many simultaneous or near simultaneous nucler power plant meltdowns would it take to kill the entire planet?
how many continents are there?
Still waiting on a fanfic to explain how Hickey survived the Tuunbaq attack, made it back to Europe, went to the Ukraine, time traveled to 1986, and became a firefighter.
the entire planet.
one power plant meltdown per continent, fren
Same reason as a sunburn turning your face red, just that Gamma Radiation is the most intense form of electromagnetic radiation.
So an equivalent bad sunburn that could take all day to get can be had in a second with gamma radiation.
not that many, maybe a dozen where nothing is done to contain the radiation.
imagine sticking your face in a microwave
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA I WANT EPISODE 2 NOW

Shovels are too expensive and were invented buy capitalists
Based, and sane user.
>"No. No I won't do that."
Are you stupid?
You'll be fine user.
>that scene where he is already dead and is about to cry and those faggot bureaucrats are shouting at him
It's literally skin cells dying and capillary rupturing. Most of the radiation burns at Chernobyl were beta and gamma. Many people received 4th degree burns which means straight down to the bone.
Okay, then come with me and we will look together.
Don't be delirious. Report your findings to me. Please escort user to roof.
It's the feed water. He'll be fine in a bit.
I DON'T WANT TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK FOR KINO
Did you guys know Chernobyl is in Ukraine? Mind-blowing!
reposting my ussr defence post from last thread
if you actually look into the disaster
what a lot of people miss is the bottom line
>28 dead
>lots of people sick
>pretty minimal damage
the whole disaster turned into a corrupt cleanup scam where companies would charge tons of money to perpetuate studies that they still need to spend hundreds of millions to clean up the site
all in all it was a freak accident.
the whole incredulity at the core actually exploding? there is no way that should have happened. and there is a general consensus on the events but still no hard timeline of how exactly it happened.
but the guys at the plant did their fucking jobs and sacrificed their lives for the better good.
the soviet response in general was pretty understandable and they handled things well.
>this all happened because of safety safety safety concerns and the actual plant was so safe but they were worried about a fucking 1 minute gap between shutdown and backup power kicking in so the crusade for safety instead of well enough alone is what caused the worst nuclear accident
kinda ironic but also kinda upsetting.
and thats an american opinion.
all that being said the fact they didnt have proper dosimeters and just assumed everything was reading off the charts or best case scenario was beyond incompetent.
there should have been triple redundancy at every fucking level of the people involved.
>hospital didnt stock up on radiation meds either
come on ussr.
gonna keep posting this until you realize the soviets did nothing wrong and reacted very well to what was an implausible situation.
sneed
>and thats an american opinion.
nice try commie
>the Soviets did nothing wrong
The citizens maybe, the higher ups were retarded in chasing a war of attrition with the US' superior capitalist system and caused this disaster by trying to force a (badly built) power plant to run tests it couldn't, in the worst possible way at that.
And then have the audacity to try and cover it up
NO ONE LEAVES
Dang, you look like you could use some sunscreen, user.
reposting for historical porpoises
can you go swimming in that water
apparently if you don't get too close to the light... yes
As long as the fuel itself is properly sealed I believe you could. Wouldn't want to try it though.
>mfw I’m dying of radiation sickness but I can’t explain how an RBMK reactor exploded
>implying it exploded
to the infirmary with you
There's dozens of better ways to present this information, instead he chooses little squares. Fucking retard stop posting this garbage.
Fukushima would be pretty cool. There were warning stones above Fukushima warning about previous tsunamis and not to build on that site. Some were hundreds of years old. The engineers and designers were warned about what would happen. They were warned to build the backup generators above tsunami height so they would still work if it flooded. They ignored the warnings and the generators shorted out. They couldn't stop restart the water circulation system to cool the reactor and it all spiraled out of control.
smithsonianmag.com
this is LITERALLY a metaphor for global warming
this is UNAMBIGUOUSLY anti-Russian propaganda and this is ABSOLUTELY why it is kino
Russian nigger shills ruined Pripyat like they're going to ruin the world. Western "conservative" fucking retards need to wake the fuck up about the degenerate idiots they've allied themselves with.
Wanna know a best part?
Because it didn't.
An average joe can't do anything to fix the problem so why bother him with the information about it. Besides the radiation wasn't even that bad
>mfw my retarded coworkers think a reactor can explode
False flagging to gaslight
I've seen everything on Yea Forums
Patton was right. We should have nuked Russia from end to end after WW2. Imagine how perfect the world would have been without the Russians. No Vietnam, no commie China, no commie North Korea, no nuclear Iran, no Chernobyl, no Ukraine invasion, no poisoning of defectors with nuclear assassin weapons and nerve agents in the UK. The world would be much less evil if the Russians were all dead.
I am
>a (badly built) power plant
that safely generated power until the year 2000.
>And then have the audacity to try and cover it up
the cold war was still a war. give them a little slack. they didnt want to hand the usa a propaganda victory. and even then it wasnt much of a cover up.
for a state system designed to lie to protect the RUSSIA STRONK at all costs?
ussr was actually pretty open about it. I mean they had to be.
all things considered it was handled really well and people who cant accept that have no reasonable argument.
also again
the reactor EXPLODING was a fucking 1 in 1000 freak implausible situation. even the guy painted as the bad guy, the chief who was sent to jail over it, even he was responding appropriately and rationally and doing what he thought was best.
I just dont like how this heroic and reasonable response to mitigate THE WORST NUCLEAR PLANT DISASTER IN HUMAN HISTORY that lead to less deaths than a fucking warehouse fire in oakland is being spun
the entire response from the people on the ground was admirable
i mean if the worst nuclear disaster in history kills less than
>a bridge collapse
>the worst traffic accidents in history
>a plane crash
>a boat sinking
so for the worst nuclear disaster in history to kill less people than the worst traffic accidents is kinda saying something dont you think?
Is it worth watching if I'm Russian? Any "lmao slavs are subhuman criminals" messages? Is Mr Hickey really in there?
only the soviet officials are portrayed as idiots
mfw what graphite lol
Nothing like that, if anything it makes the common Soviet citizen to be undoubtedly heroic
yeah he's one of the firemen
Don't waste your time with him, people that unironically defend the Soviet regime are far from reasoning
It was so fucked... you didn't see what you saw. We will yell at you until you admit you didn't see what you saw.
I mean how fucking long do they think they could cover that one up?
ill take getting an easy blast to the brain stem over fucking degenerating from the inside out any day of the weak tbhpyefasklfj
lol, if the west attacked russia at the end of ww2 they would have undoubtedly lost. all popular support was still on the soviet side, it would have been immediate worker uprising inside all western countries, even the US.
russia > modern america
its just intra-us politics
they're obviously trying to push the idea of "fake news" and trump being bad because of putin and forgetting russia today has nothing to do with the ussr. god i hate liberals
>that safely generated power until the year 2000.
RBMK reactors weren't designed for civilian use. They never suppose to work in such conditions.
The simmilar incident happenned on Leningrad power plants in 1975. But people managed to avoid catastrophe. When physics came with solution part said that immidiate modernization of all RBMK reactors will be too expensive
Dyatlov ordered to start industrial experiment to increase productivity (to celebrate 1 May)

wait.,. is there a show about this?
FUKUSHIMA IS STILL LEAKINFG. it's china syndrome.
all the figh you eat are poisones.
all the starfish are melting,.l..
they made a SHOW about this"?
you're already dead. fucking fools.
russia > nobody lol
yeah and america is refusing to modernize its own nuclear power systems and running shit from the 60s and 70s instead of building new ones from the ground up like they should be because of political pressure
sound familiar?
The sea around Japan can absorb radiation much more effectively than the air around Europe.
>it would have been immediate worker uprising inside all western countries, even the US.
The fuck retard? Nobody liked commies during the 40s and 50s, which is why fascism happened in Europe and almost happened in the UK and US.
All the west would have had to have done is paint Stalin's occupation of eastern Europe as illegitimate and western commies would have been BTFO. The reason that they didn't go to war is because nobody wanted to destroy Europe twice over when their inflation rates were already through the roof.
Why are Americans still mad at us? Jesus fucking Christ. The cold war is over, calm down, enjoy the tv show.
In February 1986 a Soviet Official said the chances of an accident at Chernobyl were "10,000 to 1".
Like Han Solo, never tell them the odds.
>ordered to start industrial experiment to increase productivity
Where did you get that from? They were testing whether the reactor could cool itself on its own long enough in case they ever needed to fire up the backup power
>all the figh you eat are poisones.
They're poisonous because of all the heavy metals, not the pissant amount of radioactive material being released by fukushima into the 187 quintillion gallons of water in the pacific ocean.
>sound familiar?
Nope.
Because USSR started using RBMK because they were cheap.
Also, I don't care about Murrica.
your government is cancer. The people you trust are destroying you and everyone else. Nobody cares about you you stupid faggot, you're MORE of a victim than everyone else.
>The cold war is over,

during the 40s and 50s because they were purged right after the war was done exactly because of what i just described. communist partisans that liberated france, italy, greece were all stabbed in the back by churchill gang and purged.

there are interviews with the showrunners where they literally say its about trump and fake news. the old guy saying to cut the phone lines to stop the spread of news is supposed to be trump saying the news is the enemy of the people or whatever.
If I feel like this show directly addresses the problem with the Soviet government. Just the people of the government and state lying to it’s own population to keep control.
Communist partisan were only a tiny, tiny fraction of the partisan movements, let alone the general population. Communism in Europe was a very unpopular minority that was able to punch above its weight due to soviet funding and guidance. However, when push came to shove, they were heavily outnumbered, which is why they lost hard in spain, germany, hungary, germany again etc.
I didn't even know there was a 4th degree for burns.
reminder that radiation is just a meme made up by western capitalists
there are no mutants or zombies here and chernobyl
>the old guy saying to cut the phone lines to stop the spread of news is supposed to be trump saying the news is the enemy of the people or whatever.
Retard.
It was typical way of Soviet mentality. And fun thing the same shit hapenned before.

Yeah, I'm aware. Why are you so asshurt though?
It used to be pretty rare to survive 4th degree burns long enough to get to hospital, outside of dropping something extremely corrosive on an extremity, so it wasn't really something that got bought up much.

>There was a huge concern that the molten reactor core could melt its way into the flooded basement. On May 4th, three incredibly courageous volunteers in wet suits dove into the basement together. The divers were an engineer named Alexei Ananenko, who knew the location of the venting valves, and two soldiers named Valeri Bezpalov and Boris Baranov, one of whom held a light. They were aware of what was at stake, and apparently knew it was a suicide mission, but were promised that their families would be well taken care of. The light failed and the poor men had to swim and find the valves by hand in pitch darkness. The valves were successfully located and opened, and the bubbler pool was drained of its 20,000 tons of water by the fire brigade, but all three men were suffering from radiation sickness even as they climbed out of the water, and each later died.
In spite of their chucklefuck superiors, the Russians do make some true heroes.
the lighting and aesthetics and music in this show are fantastic.

Is this a foreshadowing to him being a CIA saboteur the entire time? That would explain how a design like the RBMK could have a core explosion, since under any circumstance that is impossible.
>but all three men were suffering from radiation sickness even as they climbed out of the water, and each later died.
That's actually totally untrue. At least two of the guys survived to old age and at least one of them continued working in the nuclear industry.
he's delusional senpai, he needs taken to the infirmary
Stuff like this makes me appreciate this series more, since it is going to spark some more intense research that should completely debunk myths like that.

Completely wrong. They were designed to be cheap, easy to run and easy to build. They were 100% designed to be run by commoners for power generation.
