Start with Rey in TFA.
- Make the scene where she helps fix the falcon less obnoxious and not 1-upping Han Solo.
- Finn saves Rey from the Rathtars.
- She resists Kylo's mind probe just like the original
- Tries to do the mind trick on the stormtroopers, but she's clumsy and it backfires (either they go crazy or turn into vegetables or something, allowing her to escape but also clearly establishing that she is not in control of her newfound power).
- Han and Leia don't treat her like Mary Sue
- She barely holds her own in the lightsaber fight with Kylo, until the earthquake happens but doesn't defeat him.

And there you go. This is about 65%-75% of a fix. She still doesn't have proper goals or motivations, but doing that would probably require some more significant changes that would take too long to explain in one post.

funnily enough Danny from GoT qualifies

I think Alita is an interesting example because she is slightly overpowered in the first few fights, but not by too much and that one bad guy gets an upgrade and almost kills her. Once she picks up that martian body upgrade the other cyborgs just aren't a threat anymore. At least not to her anyway, they can kill her loved ones just fine. It kinda proves that it's not just strength or abilities that make a character a Sue.

men pretending to be little girls dont count

The only strong women are those written as men, and then sex swapped. Women aren't strong creatures IRL.

any female character from batman gets tortured or raped regularly and still kick asses.

I've got a whole series planned out.

Funnily, book Dany is still a Mary Sue, but show Dany isn't. One thing Dumb and Dumber have done right.

She was perfect before her new leaf. Then she bacame generic waifu #5.

Not why she's a Mary Sue. Everyone worships the ground she walks on and treats her as special for no reason. Mary Sue's aren't cringe because they're overpowered, though that factors into it. Mary Sues are considered "bad" because they're never challenged and never have to genuinely struggle to overcome anything. Whether other characters like them or not is entirely dependent on the roles those characters play in the story, not any sort of organic reaction to their character or actions.

for me a "strong" character means a character with an interesting, understandable personality, with discernible traits, motivations, character flaws etc. what many people think it means is someone who kills a lot of bad guys.

I don’t wanna call this bait since I feel it’s partially true but can anyone elaborate on how to make a strong female that still feels female without shitting on her agency as a character? Like in my mind I thought what Sansa said about her past making her stronger yet I’m seeing a shit tone of Twitter folk say that she was always capable and that making it out to be the “rape” that took her down this path negates all that. Yet I know I’m my own life that as a man many of my worst days have made me stronger and more understanding. Is Captain Marvel really what women want in female agency?

Look at Julie Andrews' character in The Sound of Music. Strong and wise with children and brave enough to defy the overly strict authoritarian father(a navy Captain) for the good of said children. Yet she's also vulnerable and female and falls in love with the Captain.

As a general rule of thumb, men write better characters than women, be the characters male or female.
Prove me wrong.

James Cameron has been giving us strong female characters for three decades.

Name one of Suki's faults.

Katara from TLA with her arrogance and mommy issues and overbearing attitude occasionally alienating her friends and her inability to let go of her murderous rage until the last possible second nearly costing her her humanity and occasionally getting trounced in fights even against non benders or equally matched opponents

Hela unironically.

His only strong characters are from sequels of movies done by others. All his originals are bland useless vaginas spending whole movie asking to put dick in them.

I don't need to. Robert Jordan did already. Dozens of them, in the Wheel of Time series.

>retarded boomer
>thinks all movies, even the, action hero ones, need to conform to his idea and level of realism disregard the the natural levels inherent their respective film genres
>only mentions bell curves when they support his opinions

The problem isn't just with how you write a strong woman, it's also with how many, if any, do you actually need in your and also how strong do they need to be?

Personally i think it's good to have a diverse group of women who contrast with one another their own strengths and flaws.

Female characters don’t have to be written as badasses to be strong female characters.

Galadriel from LOTR is a good example of this

Incorrect. Rose is a strong character. Molly Brown is a strong character, and whatserface from The Abyss is also a strong character.

Protagonist of You're Next I guess.

This scene aged like wine.

Jury's still out on if Carol Danvers is a Mary Sue or not. She displays a tendecy to leap into action without consideration of anything else which has worked out for her so far because she's extremely powerful. If she runs into Celestials or Eternals in Captain Marvel 2, she may have to change.

That one typo bothers me to no end. Also, I haven't seen a single episode of GoT. What exactly did the writers do to "screw over" the female characters?

>Has set personality traits which effects her decisions
>Struggling with something in their life, perhaps attempting to get over existentialism, get over something that happened in the past, or get past a current problem which is actively impeding her lifes progress.
>Has a reason to want to continue living, or perhaps a reason to not want to live anymore
Pic related, ,, and are decent examples of this. Tomboys tend to be the best to write for a "strong woman", because their more masculine tendencies tend to give them goals and ambitions, instead of wanting to be servantile to a patriarchal figure or being a marie sue. Sues are not human, they have no ambitions, no struggle, no goals, but are for some reason put in interesting situations that would only ever happen if they had the previously mentioned things. This is why marie sues are so jarring and why people tell you to just right a man and make them a woman.

she knows what casting couch directors like

The problem is that most main characters fall inder the category of mary sue.

The real issue is that most female MCs are of the same level of mary sueness of Superman. You know, perfect leople who do no wrong, never get hurt, always win out of nowhere and so on.

So basically write a female who wins in the end, but has struggles and flaws along the way, and plays somewhat by the same rules as every other character.

Because that man understood women. He knows that they are fucking insane and the ones he put through that came out better off for the experience.

She´s not a Mary Sue shes just and INFJ,people like her because shes willing to put her life on the line as many times as it takes to get shit done, isnt afraid of dirty and unfeminine things such as hard labour and because she overall wants the best for people, but in order to reach her goals she does get shot and the like several times, and she needs plenty of people to be of any use(there are like 6 times in the movie alone in which she would have died if someone hadnt saved her),and characters that oppose her arent necessarily portrayed as bad,too

Maka Albarn,Nikaido, all women in the Akira manga,Lady Eboshi and Miki Makimura(in the manga, bitch is ok with throwing molotovs at people at the verge of her potential death and fighting gansters twice her size, both unarmed and to the death with a knife)are godly examples

Too bad the story is dog shit

Still a bigger Mary Sue (a literal prophesied messiah) than Rey

/thread

do you know what a mary sue is

Scarlet Witch.

I think what annoys me about Rey is that the material is there to write a decent character, but they decided to go for a blank slate to appeal to the young adult crowd.

Take her background for starters. In contrast to Anakin and Luke, Rey was abandoned and whatever authority figures she knew were probably negligent and unfriendly. This should result in someone with abandonment issues (mirroring Anakin), along with a more cautious and cynical attitude (this will come into play later in the post). Furthermore, as a female human living alone, she likely is often at a frequent physical disadvantage, teaching her the importance of planning and fighting smart/dirty to compensate. However, as seen with BB-8, it would be clear that despite her rough exterior, Rey would have a heart of gold deep down, establishing her as an ultimately heroic character.

2/2

The cynical attitude would be a great way to justify her quick rapport with Han, since he would notice that they're basically birds of a feather. It would also allow her to set herself apart from Luke and Anakin, who were more idealistic at the start of their stories. In addition, the whole pragmatic planner/fighter trait would also add to her relationship with a smuggler famous for shooting first.

I'd even have these traits play into her final battle at the end of the movie. Kylo Ren is injured but the superior technical combatant (on top of still being a fairly decent sized guy). Rey thus has to fight smart, keeping her distance and exploiting her opponent's injuries and exhaustion to wear him down. Then, despite all that, a Kylo Ren who is basically running on fumes finally has her at his mercy. Like in the actual movie, Rey calls upon the Force, but unlike the movie where she turns the fight around, it allows her to make the one move that allows her to quickly surprise Kylo and end the fight. He's stunned but in no shape to follow up (without necessarily being completely helpless, thus allowing him to maintain some dignity) when the planet starts cracking apart.

Attached: Tigress-factory.jpg (1920x816, 185K)

She should lose to Kylo. Planning and fighting smart is important, but it would be more interesting for her development if she finds that those traits aren't always enough. This new opponent has come along which needs not only new skills to combat, but also a completely different mindset. As such, it would be interesting if they make her character unruly and childish in the way a lot of people who had poor parenting are, but the loss makes her mature and take things seriously.

If she wins, then there's really very little point for her to do anything, least of all grow. The series itself encountered this problem with her too, where it now feels like her motivations are completely artificial and just convenient for whatever direction they want to go.

Unironically.

A strong female character should be able to utilise some kind of advantage to overcome the weaknesses of stature and frame.

Picture Rey, but based on a planet controlled by dark-side force users, desperately trying to get off her planet through the only means available to her - joining the nu-Sith/Knights of Ren. Already, we have a motivation: get out of a shithole planet where she would otherwise be doomed to work as a subsistance farmer/scavenger...

Instead of being really good with the Force, we show strength of character as she makes her way through the darwinist sith ecosystem as an underdog. Maybe she does something clever with force telekinesis, lures opponents into traps, sabotages their lightsabers, ambushes them. Maybe she uses her scavenging skills to make a drone. Certainly, she doesn't show up like movie-hermione and do everything better than everything. Also, it would be good to make sure that others in the academy have plots of their own, that they aren't just purely reacting to Rey. They don't know she's the center of the universe.

At the end, she gets to graduate to being a Knight of Ren or whatever, get a ship and go out to the galaxy, where she realises how much less stressful it is to make friends, not allies of convenience. Maybe she gets jilted by Kylo, who she has a crush on and pursues revenge against the First Order.

Manga Alita is ok tho

A woman who gets enslaved in a grim dark medieval world at childhood. Has to go through work, sex abuse and torture but is constantly reminded of her father/mother/older sibling/{insert role model} reminding her of how she must always keep going and to value herself, not matter how tough things get.

She eventually has to deal with a jealous noble woman who finds out her husband has impregnated our protagonist. She tries to get help, but nobody gives a shit about slave girls; so her baby is taken away when it is born.

She goes on a revenge quest by secretly rallying her fellow slaves and playing the politics game until she is able to stage a revolt.

Despite all the loss they suffer, they’re ultimately successful. Everyone celebrates but our protagonist is shaken by her ordeal. But just as her role model told her growing up, she must persevere and so she does. The end

God, I'm so glad they left the egg impregnation scene out of that film.

No wonder Micheal fastbender was so odd after that film for a while.

literally just write a good character that also happens to be female, people get so caught up with the female part of "strong female character" they forget the other two of three

what makes a strong character in general?

>goals that they wish to attain
>something they must struggle against to attain those goals, whether it be external, internal, or both
>a balance of strengths and flaws, whether mental, physical, emotional, etc
>development from a weaker status to a stronger status over the course of the story
>thematic connection to the story as a whole
>a good backstory, or a good reason not to reveal the backstory
>for visual media, good design; silhouette, attire, looks that fit the character, etc
>some sort of unique factor that makes them interesting, or at least not a bore to read about/watch

there are no special ingredients separate to a strong FEMALE character, just shifts in the fundamentals, specifically gender - the reason why this is done wrong so many times is because most people, even hollywood writers, are just dog shit at writing and forgot the basics of creative writing that they teach you in 5th to 8th grade

Satsuki would be more pertinent

It is clear that there has been put a lot of effort into this chart, but the very first question is a major problem for it. What exactly is meant by "carry her own story"?

Every female main character in The Last Airbender was a very well developed character.

Write it for a guy then make it a girl

Being an hothead who fucks up because of this is a fairly decent character flaw

isnt that every protagonist in video games

i mean most of them right

What? How?

Is Gomorra international?

I hate the "empowered through abuse" trope

i'd like to also add in addendum, if you're specifically trying to make a heroic character that is female, stop fucking trying to make them heroic relative to how much better they are than men; a hero is one that takes the most base, romantic, sought after, defined traits of their kind and acts as an exemplar of those traits

general male heroic traits in movies/myth/epics:
>physically strong
>brave
>honorable
>honest
>a good leader
>fights or aspires for a purpose higher than himself
>has something precious to lose, or precious to gain/regain, which acts as a source of immitigable inspiration

want to make a heroic female character? take base, romantic, sought after, defined traits of the female kind:
>empathetic
>wise
>feminine but not as to be meager or weak
>matriarchal in some cases
>emotionally strong
>strengthens her familial, marital, or communal status and in doing so strengthens herself
>beautiful - though this does not have to mean in terms of looks, but could mean graceful, or doing things in good form

all of these traits are still interchangeable with tweaking between male and female heroes

Because strong literally means physically powerful

Pretty much every female character in any comedic or detective BBC miniseries.

>Never needs to solve problems with brain
True, she solves the main problem with her heart, thanks to a man

I actually find most of the main 5 questions flawed/nebuolus

Create and write a character to be a dude without a romantic plot up until the last moment then swap genders

Thank me later disney execs

actually easy

It's too bad nobody in the mainstream ever brought up how ahead of his time Romero was with his casting choices in the original trilogy. He was putting blacks and women in lead roles WAY before it was cool to do so, and they weren't written to be walking stereotypes, or be all about "MUH RACISM" or "MUH SEXISM".

Shitty vg characters maybe, but I don't think it's a fair comparison.

Attached: 4566083-8228499051-mad-m.jpg (680x1056, 153K)

That's because the Manga is made by a woman, and not a group of men trying to decide what women want to get their dollars.

Is that true? GRRM has known how he wants to end the series the entire time, and just doesn't know how to get himself there?

Brainlet opinion. Do yourself a favor and check a dictionary.

Go back 10 years, many strong females characters were good characters.

Yeah, no.

This and pic related are best examples.

She's not strong, she's just an angry jobber

>Write up a strong female character that isn't a Mary Sue.
Already done.

This is a good one.
Her strength is mostly mental/emotional and it's not defined by being better than a man (Hannibal) but just being able to survive against him and use him in a way others can't.

That just sounds like you being pissy and not understanding what a mary-sue is or how powerlevels in the Avatar canon work.

Most decent RPGs will let you be a huge asshole that is loathed by everyone if you want

Luv from 2049

That sounds like a fangirl trying to justify her Mary Sue without actually providing any counter-arguments

I'm pretty sure Ripley in alien movies is a regular movie hero but not a mary sue

yeah, "heart". Nuking your enemy with an energy ray is solving a problem with heart/love.
Fucking hated that movie

>thanks to a man
he is the hero in the movie. The main chick is nothing but an obstacle to him and his quest to stop the war (aside saving him from drowning in the beginning).

Unironically good posts.

I like her. For some reason she is frequently omitted in these kind of discussions

No it's because she was good at what she did.
Being a female does non make you more competent than a man at writing female characters. Being a good writer (male or female) does.

good choice

Strong female character = Mary Sue. Search your feelings, you know it to be true no matter how pictures of women that won't actually be considered "strong female characters" by those in charge of determining what newspeak words mean you post.

Also, most female characters posted as positive examples in this thread are men with boobs.

I agree, but most RPGs aren't decent

Is Mikasa a mary sue?

>arguments
You assume the metalbending came out of nowhere when it's a demonstrable function of the way her entire powerset utilizes her blindness. Just because she solved the puzzle at an opportune moment doesn't mean it wasn't an answer she'd been studying toward literally her entire life.
>some sort of MISANDRY garbage
I thought you had arguments?
>learned earthbending blah blah blah
Yeah. She learned earthbending from something that could also earthbend. Like every other earthbender on the fictional planet. It's literally established that the first earthbenders learned from badgermoles. Please keep reaching crybaby.
>blindness isn't a disability
Because having a blind main character in an action show about fist fighting with magic powers actually be handicapped by their blindness would be boring as fuck. And again, based on her powerset it's not even a far reach to say "being good at earthbending basically nullifies blindness". Also she's shown to be at a disadvantage when she can't rely on her earthbending to "see".
You literally don't know what a mary-sue is. Get better arguments.

>alien was written with genre neutral characters where every character could be either male or female
>the one female that's not a mary sue was never written to be a female
Makes sense

Attached: IMG_2432.jpg (200x150, 4K)

Not really. She's autistically good at fighting, sure, but she gets led around by the nose by Eren.

>She's autistically good at fighting
Why is this kind of anime so cringe

>just write a man with boobs, lmao

How many books written by women for women you've read?

>goals that they wish to attain
>something they must struggle against to attain those goals, whether it be external, internal, or both
>thematic connection to the story as a whole

Also, nothing else is ever necessary if you write an adventure story.

>mothra looks like that

>learning shit out of nowhere or with minimal training
That's a problem with literally every major character in Avatar, not just Toph.

There has never been a good book written by women for women.

>Just because she solved the puzzle at an opportune moment
The fact she solved the puzzle at all is what I'm referring to, let alone solving it at such an opportune moment.
>muh misandry is no argument
Whoa, you nullified my point with a buzzword. Do I hear everyone clapping?
>She learned earthbending from something that could also earthbend
She learned without even seeing, somehow. Kicked the ground, and that turned into Earth ending with correct form because... they liked her because she was blind? Cough*asspull*Cough.
Not to mention that a kid interacting with animals established to not necessarily be friendly unless you know some good music without getting killed by said animals...?
>would be boring as fuck
Yes, Sokka being an actually normal guy was SO boring, right?
>based on her powerset it's not even a far reach to say "being good at earthbending basically nullifies blindness"
Based on his powerset and disability, Zuko should've been a master tattoo artist.
>she's shown to be at a disadvantage when she can't rely on her earthbending to "see"
Point, though that only happened once when she had to cross on ice, which was already a bad place for an earthbender to be.
>You literally don't know what a mary-sue
Everyone likes her despite how trashy her personality and actions are? Check.
Animals twittering at the sight of her? See above.
Asspull powers to keep her an unbeatable badass whatever it takes? Check.

Her teachers were blind molerats that she somehow observed through... nothing, and learned how to see through the earth from... how again?

But that's what moths look like IRL - cute, fuzzy and colorful.

Attached: moth2.jpg (570x382, 65K)

No I know. She’s better than everyone, loved from the beginning by all the good characters, overpowers and kills multiple armoured men twice her weight easily, saves the world as a prophesied messiah, more intelligent than anyone in her kingdom, and also has bullshit animal calming powers. Fanfiction tier MC.
The whole story is based around how completely perfect and right she is and how completely wrong the bad people are. Complete Mary Sue. Kushana is leagues better.

>Everyone likes her despite how trashy her personality and actions are?
False.
>Animals twittering at the sight of her?
That's not even a function of a mary Sue that's also not fulfilled by "not being killed by fucking mole monsters".
>Asspull powers to keep her an unbeatable badass whatever it takes?
Just because you don't like it or find it logical does not constitute an asspull. I'm sorry for your retardation.

>Just because you don't like it or find it logical does not constitute an asspull
How the hell is someone supposed to decide something is an asspull if finding it illogical doesn't count?

Yeah, but even Toho has done drastic redesigns, so it's not like there's not a precedent for this.

Revise this sentence, and rewrite it to make sense.
>Just because you don't like it or find it logical does not constitute an asspull
>You're wrong because you're wrong
Outstanding logic there pal!

>Woman is a 160 IQ high functioning psychopath who only kills people who get in her path.
>By day she's miami plastic surgeon marta gargantua, by night she's a serial killer/drug baron/cult leader/slave broker/pirate queen/offshore banker, who secretly manipulates cartels, starting and stopping gang wars, accidenting high ranking members so that fools she's controlling can be promoted, giving her full access to cartel funds and assets.
>Her criminal persona has many aliases such as: tunda, patasola, peuchen, and her most popular one santa muerte.

>The cartels and local police have to make up crazy conspiracies to make sense out of some of her deliberately more bizarre crime scenes, they think it is the work of local bogey-men/cultists/cryptids.

>operates out of a boat, has an unregistered hidden private bunker connected to a small officially uncharted sub-aquatic cave network (going from tampa florida through miami all the way to santa clara cuba), also has remote controlled cheap submersibles, the rest is just cartel assets (she's very frugal).
>Her area of influence is the entire Caribbean sea and the southern part of mexican golf
>She created a secret cartel that parasites all the other cartels.

>Tricked all the cartels into thinking folk religions are magic by pretending to be various of death gods/demons that hear their thoughts and realize their murder wish list if they practice creole/mayaztec religions and sacrifice/eat people.

>everyone in french Guyana is part of her cults, she uses them to bug french satellites before their launched into space.

>Her usual Modus operandi (she usually does this on her own) is to, over the span of several months, find a small group of low ranking grunts, kill one third, kidnap one third and leave the last third psychologically damaged via psychotropics/psyops and violence.
The kidnapped members are surgically and psychologically altered, the ones used in terror tactics are turned into voodoo zombies to be used against their former cartels. They get facial surgery to become a doppelganger of the target, lobotomized and fitted with animatronics implants/bombs, ex: they get the face of their boss, when their boss finds out about them, they explode (just enough tnt to explode their bowls on the floor) the She kidnaps the boss and reapeats the procedure but with a bigger bosses face this time.
>the ones not used in terror tactics become either members of her secret cartel (some become sleeper cells in other rival cartels) or are transformed in into transexuals/transracials/transpecies(thanks to her knowledge of the immune system she can successfully transplant orangutan limbs and panther teeth/gums + jaw and snout).

contrary to what some feminists say, a strong female character isn't a woman who acts like a man
a strong male character is about strength, overcoming and destroying
a strong female character is about enduring, persevering against all odds and resisting and doing the most of out the situation
these are some examples of really good strong FEMALE characters
>Carmela Soprano
>Ripley
>Clarice Starling
>Sarah Connor
Elizabeth Swan from the pirates movies and recently Armstrong's wife from the first man movie

>3. titties so big they block her neck
pleb

True. It's 6 titties or bust.

Just write a decent male, and change it to a chick:

A woman with personal issues at the onset who comes across a situation that upheaves her entire life. She has struggles, grows a little and eventually wins some pretty hard fought battles.

Ask yourself did you ever find yourself rooting for Rey or Capt Marvel or any other Mary Sue as opposed to Sarah Connor shooting the T1000? I highly doubt it
