I wouldn't say that he's better in the manga/OVA but he's definitely different in the movie. I think it was a good idea to make him a sexy bad boy instead of a scrappy street rat but I get why some people disagree with that.

I understand telling them in person to show that he's serious, but literally the same night as the try-outs? Why? Why not waiting until tomorrow, or the day after?

this is gonna be one of those indy theater saturday night specials starting very soon and continuing for a long time i'm sure. i mean they already replay movies like fury road and the lord of the rings at my local one.

Other than the extra depth and realism the coolest thing was just getting to see through the cyber bodies to all their internal parts.
Eventually someone will convert it to google cardboard or whatever so we can watch it with VR headsets without dropping a grand on a 3D TV.

He did it as soon as he had an avenue to Zalem without jacking off cyborgs, but I guess that's part of the reason why we never get a training montage of any kind: If time passes, it becomes more questionable why Hugo decides to talk to Tanji at the very hour of the try-out. It makes sense that he does so in person, since we don't really see Tanji with a phone, and an in-person conversation is more persuasive.

Never thought I'd see ever see Battle Angel come up again after watching the old Ova. Crazy how faithful the new writers were.

I know a lot of people are bigger fans of the manga than the OVA (or haven't seen it at all) but I think it was a good idea to use the structure of the anime to base the movie around rather than try to adapt the manga exactly

They kind of half announced it, they said that it'll have two hours of special features but we have no idea when it'll actually drop

Just finished it, loved it! Wow, that was pretty refreshing, definitely rewatching when a better quality one comes hopefully. Also very surprised (and slightly frustrated) how certain details are very close to my own short film screenplay is to the intro. I might have to change it completely now to reduce the amount of "durr he just copied alita" despite writing the first draft a year and a half ago.

That's some serious worldbuilding and the designs were so fucking cool like Zapan's mayan calendar motif on his back. Possibly the best way to do anime style in live-action.

The only thing I don't like is the fact there's so much hinging on sequels. It's beyond unwise to make something as a part 1 when you have no clue if you'll get to make the rest. A film should always be standalone and self-contained but with a rich enough world that you can build on top of. TV series run into this shit all the time, getting canceled before the story gets to finish because money decides everything and it's not lucrative to continue.

Other than that, consider myself a fan and inspired.

It does demand a sequel, but I still see it as a satisfying self-contained story in its own right as well. If I had to compare it to anything, I'd say Emprire Strikes Back: The immediate conflict is resolved, but the wider conflict rages on.

I would agree with you, I still do mostly, but Vector being constantly mind controlled by a sequel character was a waste of perfect casting.

I'm just a fledgling guy, when you have the clout of rodriguez and cameron, you tend to be able to get away with a lot. Do you realize how annoying it is sometimes? A few months ago I had a brilliant idea while I was doing some DIY. Of a dude locked in a time loop for no reason. When he dies, he's born again and repeats the years. By the time the story starts, he's already repeated his entire life hundreds of times and remembers fucking -everything-. He's already done it all, all the hedonism, all the depression, all the bullshit. Now he just lives. It all changes when at one point he sees a person he's never seen before, which can only mean they're in a loop as well.

Alita strikes me more as an Eldar Exarch, being a bred warrior but also the aesthetic isn't very gothic. Closest to cyberpunk out of all the 40k races is Eldar, though not by much.

I was writing a novel about a bunch of regular people who suddenly discover they have superpowers...
...one year later, Heroes came out.

I was really crushed, because it was exactly the kind of mysterious, cool, slick, modern superhero universe I was going for, and it made my fledgling ideas obsolete and unoriginal.

All was forgiven, though, because that first season of Heroes is one of the best seasons of television of all time and I absolutely fell in love with the show when it first was out.

We're literally a community now, not just a collection of normies like the ones forming all these transitory GoT and capeshit threads. We need a general for continuity.

People enjoyed it and the world. It follows the rules and members are civilised enough to keep it within one thread because that's all they need, unlike other fandoms who act like beasts.

Dragon's Dogma vs Dark Souls communities, basically, if you can get the reference.

My solution has always been to say fuck it and throw as many of my influences as possible into the mixer and hope they eventually meld beyond distinction.

That's one of the places where Johnson's performance fell short. He didn't convey much of the inner turmoil Hugo is experiencing because of his feelings for Alita vs. his criminal career.

If he had been able to convey Hugo's inner conflict better, it would have made sense that he was desperate to formally quit being a jacker but not until he'd found another source of income. Without that it seems contrived for Hugo to rush and tell the crew as soon as Alita starts playing motorball.

Oh that's generally what i do. I love putting in references and stuff to things I like and have been inspired by. What is important is that we keep in mind that ideas themselves aren't the important part, it's the execution.

It's just a bit too much when something is almost IDENTICAL. Then you need more creative execution. It's a big muddled mix for what's enough and what crosses what lines. you just have to keep trying and stop sitting on your productions lest others make them.

I'll do some brainstorming to edit my script. I want to make this short maybe later this year or 2020.

I don't think they'd transfer well to a live-action film, but who knows. I just prefer the grounded youthful adventures feeling. Hard to see her work with Nova or fall for someone else now that Hugo gave her such motivation. He's clearly a huge reason for her drive. Timeskips, going to other planets and finding new loves kinda saddens me, like he's just forgotten.

Are you talking about LO? That's so far down the story I doubt that's ever getting adapted. Cameron was a fan of the original series, and bought the rights 2 years the first chapter of LO was even released. As for Alita changing... the original series spans more than a decade. It's normal for her to not be the young woman she was at the start.

Yeah it seems so. Timeline says right now it's been 27 years since Ido fixed her, at the current point in time in Mars Chronicle. And true, they'd change, but for some reason I would like this to keep this grounded atmosphere, boy-meets-girl vibe. I can't put it into better words, but it feels really comfy. I want her to get vengeance and then live a normal life. Ideally I'd have hugo actually live somehow so they just live together, but that would mean changing the core story and not being faithful. It's an abstract kinda feel. Maybe I'm putting myself in the story too much.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but historically isn't Q1 of a year where movie studios send movies they don't have much faith in to die? CM can be seen as an exception because her movie was being used as a prelude to Endgame which came out only a month or two later.

In my mind that's just one more bit of evidence that the movie was just left to fail. It just makes me angrier.

It always takes me aback at how alien CGI filming is. I'm an actor and I've done very few things that need greenscreen but it's some of the most abstract shit I've experienced. You might go "Oh wow, an actor has to play pretend and imagine there's something there when there's not, who would've thought" and you'd be right, but consider how a lot people can't act naturally when they have a scene talking with another human being, now imagine doing that shit when you're trying to imagine yourself in some hi-tech laboratory with all manner of charts and cgi robot gubbins all around you. I love this fucking craft.

I was passing through a rough personal time and a friend who works for a local tv production company asked if I wanted to help him on set. Carrying cables, help set up lights, make coffees etc, but I've known him for 15 or so years so it was mostly a "get your mind off things" deal.

That said, I got interested watching people act and I've always been into storytelling and since I grew up as an introvert, I could do a lot of impersonations, mimicking films and all that. "Playing Pretend" was generally one of my escapes.

Signed up to be an extra in film productions that came by, and one time was noticed by a casting director who got me some tiny cast roles in a few films. Now I'm trying to expand. Found something that genuinely gives me purpose. Snowball's chance in Satan's fiery butthole I'll become a huge name but that's not important. If I get to do super fun shit like Alita then I've won life.

I started as an extra around Summer 2013. I haven't had many parts and most of my characters don't even have names, but they're credited roles with screentime so it helps your resume/CV's look. I never trained and I was entirely lucky that I got noticed because I was literally called because I helped a friend with an online magazine article about beards and I wrote down hobby: acting. I went for an audition and that's how I got my first credited role. He was just scrolling by bored one night. There is no single way into acting. I never even trained or thought about it before then, now I'm balls deep.

If you want to get into it, start practising and ask around. Write something, get somefriends together and make a short film, submit to festivals and post on social media. Apply as an extra, do theatre, mingle with filmmakers. Do one, some or all of these. There's no guarantees and I truly am sorry if that feels like a cop-out but it's the truth. Some struggle all their lives and never get past a certain point. Some are born into it, some get a "big break" after decades of work. There's no one way, but if you don't take the plunge, you can't get there.

Don't do it for the money though, or the fame. One of the top rules.

I got into it at the tail end of 3rd Ed as a 12 year old I think but it's disheartening to see even oldhammer-fags using the nu-terms for shit. It's basically why I live in 30k now. The updated CSM looked good so I picked up a kit. Being about the same size as the retarded tacticool Primaris makes modern 40k a little more enticing just because I am Alpharius and I want to murder any Primaris I see. Kill Team games are probably all I'd be up to playing.

If she was on Nostramo, that'd be grimdark as fuck. Place is a hellhole even by 40k standards. I feel like aHive City is the wrong atmosphere for Alita because they 're hammered into us that the majority of the populace lives in pure squalor and work 16+ hour days in factories under harsh masters. Iron City has kids eating ice cream and playing motorball and vendors selling noodles and chocolate. It feels more like it should be a Civilised World as the closest analogue.

Alita in Nostramo would be on her toes 24/7 and kill people 24/7. In a Hive City, she'd be supremely depressed cause the people doing the enslaving as lawful subjects of the Emperor. Thus a Civilised world is ideal, since she can essentially be herself and take out criminals and heretics.
