Couldn't disagree more, at least speaking for the books. George's been pretty deliberate about killing characters only once their storyline is at its end. It actually feels like the majority of characters are still alive, to me.
The show's problem isn't that all the interesting characters died, it's that they made all the interesting remaining characters uninteresting.

Stannis was like 95% robot. Robb was a traitor to his kingdom, and therefore needed to be punished. There was no compromise with Stannis, only crime and appropriate payback. If Robb were to stand down, Stannis would likely still execute him for treason like he cut Davos’ fingers.
