Split/Glass aren't super good, but the concept of split personalities can't be good in film (or media in general). In spite of this McAvoy gave what is probably the best attempt at the concept at least to my knowledge. The personalities appear distinct and recognizable and allowed him to show off his range. His performance was good enough that it honestly left me wanting for more even if the films weren't good as a whole.

The truth of Carcetti is that he was always doomed to that fate. He had a truthful moral crusade and moral desire at the beginning of his actual campaign, but it wasn't true to who he really was. He himself was not a virtuous or moral person. His adulteries and prideful ambition at the very beginning of his introduction predicted it. As a rotten individual in his heart, Carcetti could never persevere for truth or goodness, when things became difficult.
I think it's a very unwitting satire of most local democratic leaders in these coastal urban pits. They have a spur of sincere moral indignation, but it's primary emotional, because they themselves do not believe in any real higher virtue. So it doesn't last, as the oppression of their surroundings overcomes them.
