Here's the thing about people in the past; they were really any dumber than people now they just had different circumstances and less to remember (bank PIN, computer logins, how to drive a car, basic hygiene, etc).
Smart people still existed and they would be able to oversee projects like this. As a bonus, the people doing the manual work were literally just another resource and could be pushed to the limits
