Just finishing season two. At times it almost feels as good as season 1-2 GoT, and the writing and acting are all consistent.
It's basically Vikings, but instead of being shat out of some feminists wet dream, it's grounded in reality.

the main character is somewhat obnixious and the actor is a bit weak, but the battles are pretty brutal, the political stuff is not bad, and the show is overall very watchable.

alfred and beocca are probably my favorite characters, and theres enough historical tie in's that it's not complete horse shit, though you have to understand that, like the film gladiator, the main character is a fictional mish mash of several historical figures and essentially an audience self insert to be the lense through which we are supposed to see the events unfold, especially the writing of the anglo saxon chronicle in the 3rd season, which is basically the beginning of written english history of the british isles if i remember.

When I started out watching it, especially through season 1, I got strong 'Medieval Sharpe' vibes which was great and makes sense because it's based on the Cornwell books.
The difference is though (and it's crucial) is that unlike Sean Bean, the main actor is about as charismatic as wet dog shit and his bad acting clings to the show like a sour fart.

The whole thing becomes a vehicle for this utterly unlikeable pretty boy idiot to swagger around aimlessly bedding wenches (he has like three fucking love interests in the first season alone) constantly pouting about his stolen birthright and just fucking randomly switching loyalties and being a jumped up little cunt.
I wasn't once compelled to root for him the whole time.
The bromance with Leofric had shades of Sharpe and Paddy but then they fucking killed that ace bastard off for seemingly no reason and ended that promising thread.
I got about 3 eps into season 2 and somehow the quality declined ep after ep and I abandoned it.

If the show was lead by a captivating lead and had maybe a slightly stronger and more compelling arc for Uthred to follow, it'd be a really big time show.
Oh and also I can hardly suspend disbelief every time something gets 'sacked' and it's like the same 4 or 5 danish extras running about stabbing random peasants to death and I'm supposed to just pretend like there's a few hundred danes laying waste to a town. I appreciate they don't have HBO level funding but come the fuck on.
