Ballistas dont have as much recoil as you'd expect, largely cause they dont fire projectiles like modern day artillery does. The arms basically thrust the bolt into the air, and the force is projected forward or back into the ballista itself. Think about it in terms of a slingshot. Most of the force is from pulling back on it, not recoil from the actual launch. Since artillery doesnt required a 'draw-back' the force is released in another way, aka recoil
