I'm really worried for you if you believe you can accurately judge the tone of a movie by looking at screenshots, not even trailers. It can give you an idea of the aesthetic, but nothing more. Never mind that the most disturbing parts of Gunnm were never about how "dark and gorey" it was.

And yes, Alita is super "kawaii uwu" both in the manga and the movie, but why would that be an issue? Having a cute protagonist doesn't make it a children movie or a children friendly story. Grave of the Fireflies has an adorable little kid who slowly starves to death.

The way movie distribution is working now, you don’t even need to make that many actually successful movies. You only need to pander to the Netlix’es and Hulu’s of this world, and if the people who buy shows there like you, they’ll buy your movie anyway, and subsidize it with the income from their few successful shows.

I've asked this before but didn't get many responses. When do you think Alita's wardrobe stops being the late Alita's clothing and becomes what Alita selects for herself? Changes in Alita's wardrobe in the movie are important because they show how she's maturing.

Some people will say the answer is simply when Alita grows out of the late Alita's clothing maturity-wise, when Alita ages out of wearing young girl clothes. Others might say it happens before that point because Alita matures so fast and didn't start mentally at the same point the late Alita was before she was killed.

Honestly I think it's the trenchcoat. Given it doesn't match the rest of the cutesy clothing which Ido seems to have it seems like the first pick up of something which might actually be her own item. Everything from there is subsequently Alita's. (Or, as I suspect with the purple top/jeans outfit, bought on advice potentially- maybe Gerhat's? Either way it's much more hers.)

And to OP, he gets around with it by removing some of the key plot characters that are deemed too "dark", but this IS a problem moving forward because the main plot becomes pretty 18+ after this film (Stops at around the motorball saga).

Not sure about that ragged thing she takes out to the warship; the wear would tell you it's a hand-me-down but it doesn't have the same child-like vibe as the first three.

It could be the triangle shirt or the alley fight outfit but the trench coat outfit is clearly her attempt at trying to come off as intimidating on her first night as a hunter-warrior.
