Watch Gaslight
Sullivan's Travels is good too
If you want to browse some old stuff then look at AFI's Greatest films lists afi.com
Criteron Collection is a good place to use too criterion.com
I forgot to mention
Strangers on a Train
I just watched Night and the City and it was kino
Huge fan of Stalag 17. Holden holds it down.
Kino too.
I recommend M by Fritz Lang starring Peter Lorre to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet. I’ve seen sixty classic films in the last year and it still stands out as one of the greatest. Makes the Maltese Falcon look like steaming dog shit.
Been in a noir mood, gonna check out Laura because so many people have been recommending it. Also it’s 1963 so technically off topic but High and Low by Kurosawa is one of the great black and white thrillers of all time.
patrician
Kansas City Confidential is a great example of post-war Noir
It's so fucking good
Only recent pre 1959 I've watched is A Man Escaped. Incredibly tense, great watch. Amazing what you can achieve with a single location.
Night of the Hunter is amazing, so many great shots
recently saw
The Third Man
The Sweet Smell of Success
watching Ace In The Hole for more Wilderkino once i'm done scrolling Yea Forums
Kino
Iconic
I’ll be adding it to my list, thanks for recommending.
Some of these are obvious, and not exactly before 59', but I'll list them anyway
>Rear Window
>Psycho
>Red Desert
>Paths of Glory
>Gaslight
>The Killing
>The Third Man
>Touch of Evil
>A Streetcar Named Desire
>Maltese Falcon
>Double Indemnity
>Some Like it Hot
>The Big Sleep
>Out of the Past
Hiroshima Mon Amor is fucking awesome, draws parallels between forgetting the attack of Hiroshima and forgetting your soul mate. Incredible cinematography and emotional power.
Also The Red Shoes is a technicolor marvel, a very Sound of Music-like movie without the singing. Opulent set design, perfect cast and even creepy at times. You can’t believe what beauty they could capture on film before the fifties.
Solid list. Don’t forget North by Northwest.
>The Red Shoes
Look up all the films produced by The Archers
Saw this today. Kinda disappointing. Not on par with his best in terms of mystery and suspense, but overall a decent movie.
The Stranger is a neat little movie where Orson Welles plays a nazi hiding in America
Why is everything Orson Welles touches gold?
It isn't. Good director and actor, but he couldn't write an interesting story if his life depended on it.
One of my favorites.
>He saw Chimes at Midnight and didn’t throw the dvd directly in the trash afterwards
Check out a Detour. It's a noire from 1945 but it's actually still quite relevant in terms of style. It's short as well.
The Best Years of Our Lives is another great one
Made it in the mid 40s but has the feel of a 1970s film. Follows the lives of 3 guys as they're getting home from WW2
the Bowden girl is HOT
This movie is really funny.
Cary Grant has a hilarious smug energy. It’s so ridiculously pompous and charming at once.

why 1959? also, the Lost Weekend
