They were already showing a lot of bad signs. Plotlines thinned out, too much of an obsession with "le witty" small council moments, one-sided characters... It still had awesome moments, like the whole Clegane plotline or the Red Wedding, and Jaime's transformation, but if you look back at how season 1 & 2 were filmed you understand that GoT was already turning to trash. It lacked what made it so unique, mostly the realism in a fantasy setting.
