He should be a more down to earth and less idealistic foil to Xaviers optimistic hopes and and less tough less anti-authoritarian, more typical hero type foil to Wolverines anti-hero personality.
There's always emphasis put on his love life but I never personally found that to be that engaging. Using him to emphasis other character's traits by being someone to compare to is always more interesting. He's the only member of the x-men that seems like a traditional american hero with none of the anti-authority sentiment that was common in characters after Vietnam. That's an interesting person to have in the dynamic between x-men characters and how they relate to the world even if that's not the person you really want to focus on.

In the Marvel-verse, and MCU the Superheroes are mostly admired and worshipped to the point people gossip about them, worship them and name Ice-cream after them. Super-powered beings are beloved.
The X-Men however are hated, feared and discriminated against for being born with powers, possibly because people are scared shitless of what superpowered being can do. That's a problem I find with the Marvel stuff I watched and knew about growing up. How can one group of people with powers be admired or found indifferent while another is hated.
I don't know how they'll reconcile the Mutants into the MCU if you take away their backstory of being beings with superpowers who are hated or if they keep it, how they do that without making it look stupid in a world where Thor is beloved.

I see. In that case this sounds like a angle they could work off and we've got a potential story arc. The people associated with the Avengers are adults who mostly know what they are doing. They at least try to minimise collateral damage or they've developed a lot of good will for keeping the world together and bringing everyone's loved ones back.
Mutants, mainly teens, cause apprehension because initially they can't control their powers and they cause a lot of damage. Even when they grow up not many people forgive them, some even hate them for killing their parents, because humans find it hard to forgive.
This is made worse by the fact that in 2023 people are rallying around their family trying to rebuild their lives and suddenly a kid with laser eyes takes away their brother again this time permanently. A lot of people would be pissed off and not as willing to forgive even if it was a accident. This leads to fear, anger and hatred which the X-Men must confront and dissipate.

It does raise my eyebrow however that it was not the most powerful who defeated Thanos (Captain Marvel, Thor) but one of those Heroic Sacrifices that Hollywood loves so much. They've could have just packed Tony into retirement and not killed his character. Maybe give him a permanent knee injury that is beyond healing by magic or his science and indeed he'd rather not heal it.
