The story of Yugo and his brother is probably a call-back to the people trying to cross the Berlin wall, but you're right that Hugo wanting to escape the trash heap and go to the place where the rich people live, doesn't really need any further explanation. Here we need to remember that the movie isn't fan-service for existing fans - which is a trap that many Japanese made anime and manga adaptions fall into. And further elaboration on Hugo's motivation, while it would be nice, isn't necessary. If I had 20 minutes more of screentime, I would rather extend elsewhere.
But Jerome is already at our table - letting out farts a couple times each day - but otherwise accepted here.

Movie Hugo is good, but if there's something I would have wanted to see more of it's him being torn between his good and bad sides. During the apartment scene where he tells Alita not to just do things for people you can see hints of his internal conflict, where he's haunted by the knowledge of what he's done to people like her, but not much of it comes across the rest of the time.
Imagine a Hugo whose caring comes across strongly during his time with Alita but who projects a really dark and ruthless side while jacking cyborgs. Instead his performance is kind of muddled during his scenes with Vector. Failing to capture that darkness and conflict is where Johnson's portrayal fell a bit short.

thank you, it really doesn't. Look at ANY war-torn or impoverished nation. People want out. And while things don't SEEM to be as dire in IC, people still have very little regulation or law. agreed, though I'm not sure where. The easy, self-indulgent answer is "more Alita being a goof" but I'm sure there's better areas. Like maybe more explanation about the URM/Earth conflict or maybe something about what's going on with the rest of Earth.

Disney has no choice but to distribute the movie, unless they have good cause not to. Note that business is done by contracts - usually memorialized in writing - and as the successor or owner of 20th Century Fox there is no way Disney can just say "nah" and not distribute the movie even if they didn't want do it anymore. They would have to exercise some form of exit clause, or it would be breach of contract, for which Cameron and co could sue - successfully.
Who knows, maybe that contract even contains an option for distributing any sequels. Or not. We wouldn't know. But the deals for ABA has been made, and it's even possible that the deals for AFA etc. have already been made too. If there was no sequel options in the contract, Boatman can go to whomever for the sequels.

Thing is, Disney has a legal department full of who know all the tricks for sabotaging something while staying within the letter of a contract.
Disney may closely read the contract and find that it permits them to distribute the movie only as a children's toy set, and then package it with a "real metal gasoline-powered Grewishka grind cutter" toy. This toy would quickly be deemed completely unsafe for children and this would force Disney to remove the movie and its accompanying toy sets from circulation and destroy them.

I don't think you realize what the corporate culture in somewhere like Disney is like. The role of the legal department is more that of trying to prevent their management and creatives from violating any laws and contracts, and to deal with arising legal disputes. But all the best corporate lawyering is done through prevention and negotiation, not through court cases.
Is it possible that some of their executives want to harm Alita through dragging their feet in the merger? Maybe. Is it likely that some of their employees and independent contractors actually did try to harm Alita? Yes. If it happened, it might already have been quietly dealt with by Disney's lawyers.
In any case, a legal department that's out there to create problems rather than deal with retarded employees, isn't all that common.

Here's a more concrete motivation for Disney: they're invested in creating media that frames itself as liberating but focuses on fanning flames of resentment rather than empowerment. Alita is the opposite, it tells a story about self-actualization that's meant to uplift the viewer.
If Disney feels that Alita harms their strategy of making people psychologically dependent on their manufactured reality, they have plenty of reason to kneecap Alita in whatever way they can. It's one of the only ways to explain some of their creative decisions recently.

It's not the legal department who think up such things - it's the legal department who has to run behind them putting out the fires that have been set. I don't agree with brushing this off with false equivalence when it's relevant to Alita. Not all corporations are bad, and if Disney is bad then it's relevant to know how they are bad. I'm not the conspiracy theorist user, but actually discussing the specifics of how this kind of thing works is interesting. Not only for Alita, but for learning about how movie deals work.

If you're not wearing a seatbelt guys will literally run you off the road, shoot you and take your money because the law says that if someone in a car isn't wearing a seatbelt, any injuries they sustain are 100% their responsibility and no one else's.
