Will Avatar 2 be a flop or a box office goliath?

Will Avatar 2 be a flop or a box office goliath?

Avatar 2 needs to be a VR movie.

Why wouldn't it do well? Sequels generally do better than the first movie at the box office, and this is the sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time. It'll do well at the very least.

Avatar II will easily make 4 billions

China alone is a wild card. Avatar made 200 million in 2010. That's like a movie making a billion in China today, and no movie has done it.

What originally drew people was 3d and word of mouth, but what's the draw now? It'll have to be a spectacle among spectacles, can Jimbo deliver? We'll see

Given that it took them 10 years to make it, it will be fucking awesome.

agreed

see: Duke Nukem Forever

Possibly. The 10 year gap might have hurt it though as it has faded from public consciousness a bit.

Filming back to back was probably the wisest move they could have made.

The draw of it will be the underwater spectacle... which worked so well with Abyss.

we all know ol' Jimbo will tap into the Gods of the industry and make China cum buckets

It's been a decade, but Avatarland is somehow drawing massive crowds at Disney World. Boatman might also do a rerun of Avatar this fall to get the movie back in public consciousness. It should do well, though I doubt it'll be bigger than the first one.

Jim managed to make the largest scale blockbuster the world has ever seen about dumb space shit he didn't really care about.
Underwater exploration is his passion, imagine what could come out of a Jim working at 110%

the best thing is that they may film them back to back, but they'll do the special effects one film at a time.

so they don't have to fully pay for the whole series until 2 makes money.

as 3D was fading people still talked about how much better the 3D in Avatar was. Jim is better at using the tech to help the story than anyone else.

it'll make at least 3 billion because one of the tribes will pander to the chinese
screencap this

it's guaranteed to make a fortune over there pandering or not
literally the most anticipated movie in China

Avatarland was the first major new thing at Animal Kingdom in 11 years when it opened. And while it has spiked attendance at that park, research has found it's more of a redistribution of the usual huge Disney crowds. Star Wars will probably tip that scale again and Pandora will probably be more manageable to go through.

It will bomb like Alita Battle Angel

Literally no one gives a shit about Avatar unless it has some new gimmick like 3D stuff from back then.

Probably above 1B, don't see it reaching 1,5B. December movies generally get good legs.

It’ll break 3 billion. That sounds like a ludicrous think to say right now. “The first one had no cultural impact! No one liked it” they cry. But people forget how good Cameron is at marketing a movie. Avatar 2 will be huge.

>people forget how good Cameron is at marketing a movie.

wrong way round. Cameron makes movies that market themselves: hence the repeat business.

Good at marketing movies? How well did Alita do again?

>Sequels generally do better than the first movie at the box office
not really

Alita wasn't officially his. If my Slavic IMDb doesn't list him as director it doesn't count.

>dumb spaceshit he didn't really care about
He had the idea for it since 1975 and it was the reason he started making movies.

He clearly wasn't involved in the marketing, or Fox fucked him over hard.
