They’ve been building up Dany as a potentially cruel and callous person since she first locked her handmaiden in that guy’s vault in Qarth.

I liked the dark lighting. Sure, i wouldn't want all battles shot like that, but in this situation i liked it. Increased the sense of not knowing what was happening, which is what the characters probably felt too, with the weather magic also blinding them.
Fake deaths are always used in those sort of big battles, we always expect them and know that nothing beside decapitation will assure us the death of a character.
I thought it was already certain that the good army had to be completly destroyed before the NK would come for Bran and then some ambush would kill him. How they reached that point wasn't all that relevant to be honest. The NK kept flying around until the situation wasn't totally on his favour. If the battle were to last longer, he would have waited more, simple as that. Nothing could defeat him anyway in a conventional battle.

We could also simply think that those people suck at strategy. There's been plenty of real battles lost by incapable leaders, how's that so unbelievable in a movie.
