Isn't it a little odd just how quickly they said "yeah ok sure" to a complete redesign? They're simply getting free ad space from youtubers and bloggers complaining, and then pulling a "we heard your criticisms" redemption arc for extra brownie points to make these people feel like they're complaining made a difference. We have no real way of knowing if they're doing a real redesign or not as we don't have access to what the studio is talking about behind the scenes.
It's possible the studio just didn't see it as that difficult to adjust a couple aspects like the eyes and mouth to fix things a bit. The only reason I'm doubtful of the theory that they planned for backlash is I'm not sure the studio would be competent enough to come up with such a ploy.
