Kishiro himself said the movie told the story perfectly and even called it the best movie he's ever seen. When's the last time THAT happened with a western adaptation of manga? Never? Yep, never.

WRT to whether the adaptation respects the source material, it's a strange hill to die on. Rather than look at characterization, tone, themes or arcs, you choose to pinpoint a discrepancy over an ultimately unimportant geographical detail and act as if the story's fabric hinges upon that. In a story that expands to interplanetary politics between Earth, Mars, Venus and more, the focus is certainly not on North or South America, and whatever latitude you speculate them to be.

Respect to setting is important, if the attached cultural elements matter. Ghost in the Shell or Akira are distinctly set in Japan so it doesn't make sense to transport it to America in an attempt to westernize it. Not so much for Gunnm, while some locations eventually point the setting to NA they could as easily be retroactively set elsewhere. And as this user points out, Kishiro didn't any have an clear idea about world building beyond the initial setting of Iron City and Zalem.
It's cool to be a manga purist and everything, but you shouldn't be such a stuck-up about something the author himself wouldn't mind at all.
