this is good, but i don't agree with the main premise that GOT's needs to be Myth making and Iconic. I understand it's an original work meant break down and deconstruct LOTRs.

I think he's basically wrong, but he's good at presenting his points none-the-less and makes a few decent points while doing this.

That said, I like his idea for the strategy battle scene and having a squad attack white walkers. Makes so much fucking sense and would be fun to watch.

and to be fair, to do this you need to respect what you're drawing from when you create something like game of thrones or you get the last jedi. the show is pissing away the characters in empty and stupid ways for stupid reasons that cause irreparable harm to a story.
people have copied what works and created successful books, movies, and stories of all media sources for ages. do you seriously think anyone could make these kind of story mistakes outside of a source so fraught with idealistic corruption?

That's the problem though. The last jedi is inside the core myth. You can't deconstruct with Sam and Frodo.

And yes GRRM wanted to look at unexplored consequences. It's called low fantasy. Where you have basically a normal world, with some magic intrusion. LOTRS was all magic all the time. All myth. It's a deconstruction as plain as day and either you haven't read both or you don't know enough about literature or film making to understand the concepts. Not saying that to be a dick but at least you're trying to think about it.

Anyway TLJ is pissing on culture. GRRM wrote a specific work aimed at pulling that culture apart piece by piece. Down to descriptions of food and taxes. It's nerd shit but it is also intended.

So, I'm ok with them adapting that in a TV way.
Making a giant film that pulls apart the core story is another matter. That would be like a sequel to LOTRs where Gandalf was a hip black lady and Aragorn was a trap. Trying to make it work with new audiences while trying to push people to think in other ways.

It's what small budget films are for (which is also what GOTs actually is or could be)

and if you do want to say the races (despite being given both biological backgrounds and the 'creation myth' versions for races) then GoT is just as fantastical, just in shittier ways. he hits Tolkien for making fantasy too unrealistic yet presents castles with no sustainable food supply and no way to even get/grow food, impossible political and social setups if they're meant to be compared to irl, and a r*ddit-tier understanding of medieval order

so far, in the books, there has been more magic than in LotR, unless you think direwolves and dragons aren't magic, but elves and orcs are. gandalf calls himself a wizard, but melsandre does more magic in a single book than he did in three.

tolkien made his myth out of what had been until then esoteric folklore, grrm took from myth, the myth tolkien created- or if you want to give him more credit he took from myth, the arthurian myth. however you cut it, myth is core to all modern fantasy literature- low or high- any medium that seeks to subvert them with any degree of success is only subverting one myth for another, not subverting your expectation of myth alltogether.
