You must be new here. They have always been cheering for Stannis no matter how absent or off-screen dead he... excuse me the one true king is.

So how would you have done it better? Let's say you're Jon and in charge of defending winterfell.
I would:

a) build multiple trenches, at least 2, maybe 3 if not more, you have tens of thousands of men at your disposal to do this labor weeks before the battle.

b) unsullied would still be outside the wall, but I would position them behind my first trench. When the undead begin to build bridges of bodies over each trench, I would have the unsullied basically form a phalanx in front of each crossing and deal with the zombies in much smaller numbers. I would also have the trenches have oil in them so that you could light them with torches instead of relying on dragons to light them or melisandre.

c) the Dothraki would be held in reserve, as the undead are attacking I would have them ride in after the dragons started burning the undead army from each side of Winterfell to attack their flanks with obsidian arrows. The battlefield should be pretty lit up by the time they start attacking, and they can fall back if they need to around the barriers to the rear.

d) In general, I would have several bonfires prepared in front of the battlefield. The trench lighting up will help things, but you would also want a few bonfires here and there around the perimeter and in front of the trenches to be lit up to provide some view for your army and the dragons.

e) The dragons would be attacking the undead from the start as soon as they are sighted heading towards the barricades. Rain fire down on them as long as you can before you have to pull back because of WW / the NK.

f) Archers would be on the castle walls, and behind the second barrier in case the unsullied cannot hold I would have northmen and vale soldiers all with clear paths of retreat back to the castle if needed. At the same time, the unsullied would have multiple bridges to retreat if they cannot hold out at the first trench so that at least thousands of them can survive and reform phalanxes at the second battleline.

I know Stannis is and always has been the one true king for Yea Forums but there really has been an uptick in Stannis posting lately.

g) In addition, I would have the trebuchets inside the castle, constantly firing projectiles at the army of the undead, lighting up the battlefield in the process along with dragonfire.

h) Winterfell in general would still have thousands of men inside on the walls, archers on the ground and on the battlements to fire flaming arrows and obsidian arrows in volly fire if the unsullied and northmen can't hold and have to retreat back inside the castle.

i) dany and jon would deal with the NK when he shows up on his dragon. 2v1 should be easy.

j) oil and tar on the walls as well ready to be dumped onto the undead if they breach both perimeters. At the same time though, most soldiers should be able to retreat back into winterfell since I wouldn't have just 1 single bridge for my troops to move across, but at least 5 or 6 bridges along the frontal perimeter, all with men to collapse them and men to light the barriers on fire when needed.

That's about it, this strategy would basically enable them to hold out much longer even though the undead would eventually overwhelm them and likely get inside the castle, but they stand a much better chance.

They didn't have fucking time. And good luck, even with 10,000 men, digging 2-3 massive wide trenches on frozen ground. It's like trying to dig through concrete with spades.

I like the flammable tar idea. Apart from that no military tactic (which is all the Unsullied are) is going to work. The dead aren't a militia, they arent even like orcs. They run without tiring, throw/trample themselves without hesitation, don't feel anything, and can flow over any phalanx formation because the tight knit rows of spears, however constraining to the best human force, is just like grass to them. It is literally shown in the episode. The best tactic would be to abandon long range weapons all together and just take cqc.

Doesn't work. The dead don't have "flanks" and sending horses into the afterbirth of dragon fire lit fields is basically suicide, and asking for the dothraki to lose formation -- the victims of their own tactics. Best for them to dismount and either use the unsullied as a phalanx (as you suggested) and the dothraki to shore of the gaps between the spear heads

It all sounds good, but Nk's numbers were just ridiculous. I know there's been plenty of wars where the winners had the disadvantage but losing a man meant their army gaining one over their side. It's too hopeless of a situation. I guess they should have just prepared better for the zombie dragon and then prayed for a chance to get the NK while everybody else is dying a horrible death.
