actually the most popular fictional universes get popular when they have intelligent underlying logic behind them and start losing popularity if/when they break their own continuity and in-universe rulesets.
only recently, with the prevelance of increases in mental illnesses, has inconsistent, illogical, nonsensical dribble become acceptable. aka nu wars, capeshit, game of thrones.
