In the grand scheme of things, rendering Sonic one way for an entire movie, and then a different way for 2 minutes, would be worth it if it increased the attention for your movie 2-3 fold (which it did)

It isn't hard to imagine that they would create multiple samples with different sonic designs to determine the final design. Easy enough to put together a short cameo of said samples to create the trailer. Considering marketing is already a risky place to sink too much money into, it isn't crazy to assume they would do such a thing given past publicity that other contreversial advertising received.

The point is that this version of Sonic was made ONLY FOR THE TRAILER. Yes, it was definitely expensive to make this minute of footage with this bad rendering, but the REAL SONIC is not the one in the trailer. That's the one they have already designed and rendered for the movie.

I don't think this was intentional. I also don't think they are going to change much. They know if they make it too on model it's going to look incredibly weird. So, they're not going to risk making it too on model, but they are going to make it a little more on model. I don't think it's going to please everybody, but at the very least it won't be hated.
