You can do just about anything in live action if you have enough money and talent, but anime can do fantasy without limit. It doesn't cost any more than a show set in high school. Those don't involve Tomino's space autism and are more about rank-and-file soldiers. 08th MS Team does have an experimental mecha but it's not overpowered at all. But if you really want a mecha show where it's "realistic" with no super weapons or teenage genius pilots you should watch VOTOMS. In that show mechas are basically just tanks with two legs and arms.

Typically, my argument is that what would be visual effects heavy stuff is much better being just animation, because jumping in and out of grounded live action and absurd CG spectacles is jarring and even comical. Much better to go all animation so it's essentially all a visual effect.

My go-to example for this is The Winter Soldier. It was grounded as fuck for a Marvel movie, but then in the middle thee's a scene where Captain America fights a plane and the action is just fucking laughable...

but honestly I feel GoT is a pretty good counter argument to this position. I've bery little qualms about how it looks, expecially once the budget started inflating exponentially. There's iffy stuff here and there but generally it's remarkable how good it looks. And it's a fucking TV show.

I enjoy the occasional (or very rare nowadays) Yotsuba dumps in Yea Forums threads, but I don't think I'll ever learn to like anime. I don't really hate anime, but from what I've seen it's a bit too hyperactive for me.
I've thought about picking up some manga to read, but the whole right-to-left black and white thing still feels a bit off-putting.

Neither does soap opera. I didn't say they're the same, just that they're not very different. Both are essentially just pointless entertainment with no real overarching plot tying it all together.

Soap operas do have plots that are made up as they go along. They are very different from SoL anime, but 9 out of 10 people have never seen a single SoL anime and only know some shit they've heard from people who've also not seen any.

Do I need to repeat myself? They are very similar in that they just pull shit out their asses. Sure, soap operas *kinda* have continuity but they don't have any meaningful story lines that lead anywhere.
