Well it's not as smooth as tying together Daniel Day Lewis's character in Last of the Mohicans, Gangs of New York, Lincoln, and There Will Be Blood, but it can be done.

Presumably he drifts for a while before joining the army and causing trouble (Buffalo Soldiers). Now a little more disciplined, rough edges smoothed out, he travels the world and exorcises his demons of racism in Africa (Hotel Rwanda).

Then it's just a matter of settling down to a quiet, small town farm life close to Gotham (Signs).

But we know that's just a little too traumatic and sends him off the deep end once more, false memories and crazy identity and all (The Village).

Honestly ever since the Joker trailer dropped I've seen a subtle difference in those around me. I think that Joker trailer unlocked something in the population's subconscious. On my way to work this morning my usual route was obstructed by a gruesome car wreck, so I took surface streets. I saw strange sights throughout my ride. Passing under a tunnel I saw a shirtless man covered in mud pushing a midget wearing old Victorian era garb in a shopping cart while screaming some strange brutal language.
At a red light I saw a woman grab a piece of raw red meat from her center compartment and start gnashing on it. She then tucked it somewhere in her lap after the car behind her caught her attention by honking at the green light. Only half of my coworkers showed up today. They said there was a bug going around. The coworkers that did show up all had the Joker trailer playing on their computer screens throughout the day. I saw two people sitting side by side watching the same video. One nudged the other on the shoulder and said "You have to see this." Then the one guy went over and was amazed by the trailer as if it wasn't the same exact video he had already been watching.
The boss lady always wears an abundance of make up. But her lipstick and eye shadow seemed to have been applied hastily and with more product than usual.
Although this change might be a good thing. Ever since the trailer dropped there's been a noticeable influx in people's sense of humor. Every one was cracking jokes today. After a while the whole office was a symphony of fits of laughter. My cheeks and stomach still hurt from it. It seems like laughter has been just as infectious as that sick bug going around. I'm actually still laughing right now as I write this.

The more I watch the trailer and read how and why its made, the more I think its gonna be bad.

As a comic book movie, it will be bad, because it is barely following the source material in that...

As a movie though, I think at best it will be okay. The Dark Knight Trilogy loosely followed the comics and worked.
But the movie is obviously just "Falling Down" and Man Is Pushed Too Far movie. Its been done, and using the Joker to do this scenario is lame, especially if they're not going to follow the source material.
Plus everyone involved and on the outside says this is basically a ripoff/homage to Martin Scorsese films. That might make the movie good, or it might end up looking hokey and shitting making you wish you were watching an actual Scorsese film instead of this.

Also, this movie is gonna try to push one of the two messages.

I'm skeptical of protagonist Joker. I didn't like The Killing Joke, and this movie is making the Joker even less of a mystery than in that comic, so I have doubts that it can work. I think the lynchpin will be whether they try to make us feel sympathy for the character after he becomes evil.

Reminder that this movie tales place in Elseworlds and they don't follow the comics at all. That's why his story and appearance is different. That's why Bruce is younger and Thomas will be the antagonist. They can do whatever the fuck they want and those who are stuck in their comicbooks and can't accept anything that is not faithful to them should just mind their own business and pretend that this movie does not exist if it bothers you all so much. Simple like that. Nevertheless, I'm glad it won't be typical capeshit and this makes me excited for it.

I hate how everybody is trying to interpret this movie through the lens of this month's political conflict, and I hope the movie itself isn't trying to be a political piece. Or if it is, I hope it has a less topical message, more akin to Nolan's "some men just want to watch the world burn."
