I'm not as knowledgeable about the film industry, but video game jobs in programming are the lowest paid because there is an endless supply of recent grads willing to work for nothing because they loved video games growing up and most of the knowledge besides the lucky few who work on the physics engine is worthless when trying to switch career paths. They hire people on for a single game and when its almost done they fire everyone that isn't necessary for the actual release.

Incredibly, they seem to have decided to design Sonic as having a mixture of spines and fur on his back. If you look closely at the hair on the back of his head, you can see them. Personally I'm not convinced there was any way they could have done this design justice in a love-action movie. They definitely could have done it better, but not done it justice. It's just not designed for photorealism; they should have made an animated film.

Sonic is one of the best video game properties. The games havent aged well but he's still a good mascot. There are multiple lores around him where they can be explored but so far nothing worthy has been done with the multiple decent back stories. A major hollywood film that doesn't fail can make the other stuff viable again.

I don't know the character and franchise has really been bungled as of late.
It's like they don't know what to do with him.
As long as he's running around 2d 16-bit worlds without uttering a word (like Sonic Generations) he's cool as hell but the minute they put him in 3d worlds, let him speak, and flesh out the story to what he's up to everything just fucking falls apart.

Should they do just "minor" cosmetic changes to the face, sure.

But if they change Sonic's body proportions, that's going to involve much more work, especially in any scene where he interacts significantly with the environment or actors. Those animations will need to be retargeted, with keyframes manually tweaked, and some live-action footage might need to be reshot.

Sonic is an alien who's come to earth. The ending will have Robotnik also transported along with Sonic back to Moebius. Robotnik goes wild after living on another planet, and grows out his moustache. His hatred for sonci increases and he tries to use his scientific knowledge to take over the world.

So it looks like this is just the origin story for Sonic and Robotnik, and the "real" Sonic film is gonna be the sequel, but that might never be made.

That's a common misconception. CGI is way more expensive. Its one of the reasons for ballooning budgets. But it allows for very fast shooting time, and that's what Hollywood prioritizes.

Looks like they have to go back to the original source material to insert new models. Joe films despite the last one barely breaking even.

Sonic is pretty much the worst mascot ever because his characterization and name heavily limit what people are prepared to accept in his games in terms of gameplay and tone. Case in point, Mario moved onto a string of successful 3d platformers while essentially being the same character and slotting in all sorts of wacky gimmicks, up to and including sentient hats. Meanwhile, sonic's transition to 3d has constantly been hamstrung by 'gotta go fast', with the core audiences consistently resisting attempts at beat-em-up gameplay and casual platforming, plus sonic himself has gone through so many redesigns and personality changes that haven't stuck it's not funny.
