It doesn't though. You keep waiting for the inevitable bad shit to happen as a result of their drug use and it never comes. The movie isn't pro drugs but it never condemns them like most drug movies do either. For this reason a lot of idiots like it.

one of the main characters disappears (probably dies) in suspicious circumstances a couple years after the book/movie takes place. if you know the background, it isn't all honey and roses for the drug users. also, their highs seem like nightmares for the most part
