I think this is the likely explanation. OG Sonic does not speak. He is not anthropomorphized. He is just a creature going through an exciting world having fun.

They ruined that OG aesthetic as soon as they let him speak and gave him thoughts and a mind. Sonic didn't need thoughts and a mind. He was so focused on running.

Astute observations, especially the "based on early Sonic games" part, which is not obvious. The first visual is agonizing for someone who loved the old games, but then you see him in motion animated by an old familiar energy that you forgot and it's great.

I really hope leaks aren't true saying it's just a post-credits scene with him looking like this. I get that this is an origin story but they really shouldn't bank for this to have sequels. Give us the whole shabang in this one movie because otherwise we won't see more of that, I'm certain.
