The first thing wrong about this scene, is the fact that the entire army is outside the castle walls.
I don't know if you're a showfag or a bookfag, anyway, you might vaguely remember what good ol' Roose said to Ramsay in season 5; never abandon a favourable defensive position.
Winterfell is able to withstand any siege, it got underground hot springs to provide water and heat, the castle can be held with 200 men and the supplies just got stocked up.
The Dothraki are skirmishers, light cavalry, who are best at hit&run tactics, shock&awe.
This doesn't work with the undead, because they feel no shock, no awe and they never retreat.
You can't wound them, can't demoralize them, can't effectively take them prisoner, you can't route them, which means that you can't pursue them, which in all battles is responsible for 80% of all casualties.
They have no fear and no physical restraints caused by fear, they have no physical restraints caused by wounds or blood loss, you can merely burn them, disable their limbs, behead them, or attack them with dragonglass/Valyrian steel.
Even as someone that didn't study military history, you can imagine how stupid this episode really was.
Dothraki are trained skirmishers, specialized on using scythes and archery in combat.
There was no one to man the castle walls, when the Unsullied, who are especially trained for castle defense and defensive formations were outside, when the Dothraki skirmishers were outside.
The entire plan was to wait until they killed the troops outside the lit trench, wait until they overran the catapults (which was placed in front of the infantry, by some morons), wait until they overran the trench and killed the troops outside the castle walls, wait until they killed the troops on the castle walls, wait until they killed the troops inside the castle walls, wait until they killed the troops guarding the towers, wait until they killed Bran's personal guard and THEN kill Nighty (with dragonfire).

I know this is Dabid but I'm really hoping for a new Red Wedding. The most tragic thing about that episode is none of the characters have come out of it learning anything. So it remains to be seen whether D&D are fully embracing the "YASS QUEEN SLAY" bullshit or they will give Sansa, Arya, Dany and Cersei what they deserve. All of them are just as smug, arrogant and blinded by their lust for power and revenge as anyone fighting during the War of the Five Kings but whereas Martin subverted expectations and gave all of them their just desserts it feels like the writers are just as much cheerleaders for the characters left on the board as the normies are meaning I could easily see them just forgetting about everything and giving them all the crowd pleasing moments they expect. And it's not because they have risen above the past protagonists in any way and deserve the victory, it really seems to boil down to "they strong women, they smart and will get what they want." But a small part of me is hoping i'm wrong because we have 3 episodes left, there's got to be something in store but really all we know so far is Tyrion dies who they are proud to keep telling us is useless so far so it just keeps with the same agenda.
