Let's be blunt here, Downey's biggest years were 2007 to 2011 when he (not just Tony Stark) was the selling point. Tropic Thunder and Due Date was Downey being funny. Sherlock Holmes 1&2 was Downey being Holmes. The Soloist was Downey being Oscar bait.

But ever since the first Avengers movie, Downey is no longer the selling point, Tony Stark is. I guarantee you he's resented the fact that outside of The Judge (which bombed and earned no awards momentum), he's only been in MCU shit as Tony Stark.

It's more profitable to hire a cheaper actor and using the value of the MCU movie brand people like RDJ helped build to sell future movies.

He's played this whole thing like a genius. Johnny Depp tried to pull it off with less success because Pirates of the Caribbean didn't pan out like Marvel, and Depp caught some shit in his personal life that tarnished his star, but RDJ kept his nose clean and down, while absolutely taking Disney / Marvel to the fucking cleaners over and over again. It's not that they can't afford to write him a $250 million check for Iron Man 4, it's that they can get some fresh blood in the series for $500,000, and even if the gross suffers, at some point it becomes a matter of principle.

Downey pretty much created the tone of the MCU, and they've gotten wealthy as fuck off of this, so he absolutely deserves to be rich as fuck, but as indispensable as he's been, there's a principle that's going to be harder and harder to ignore.

Only loser here is going to be Hemsworth or Pratt or whoever makes a stand to get RDJ-size compensation, because Marvel has to be itching to crack down on some faggot to get everybody else in line, like they did Terrence Howard in the beginning.
