Then decided it was his children. Then decided it was his bastard child. He was wrong the first two time, why do we assume he was right the third? Fact is, Rhaegar was just plain wrong. His interest in prophesies motivated him to do a lot of things, yet in the end, he died like a bitch with his rubies splashing scattered in the river.
