It was really popular in the 60s. Famously both the Beatles and the Beach Boys, along with Donovan and some other people traveled to India and learned to practice Transcendental Meditation from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (wrote the book on TM) himself in the late 60s. Then George Harrison took Sitar lessons from Ravi Shankar there also.

It was already a hot spot by that time, as prior to this a bunch of westerners, including notable people like Allen Ginsberg, had gone (usually) in search of spirituality. It was the 60s and people were really into psychedelics and this sort of stuff. Westerners began to be more exposed to eastern religions and stuff by people like Paramahansa Yoganda (Autobiography of a Yogi) and Allan Watts by that point already.

I guess it was just really appealing to hippies then. I mean, it's this super old religion and is super compatible with the whole peace/love thing of the love generation and doing acid. It was mostly a cultural phenomenon then in the 60s specifically. You had the Hare Krsna movement starting around then too. It probably just seemed really mysterious and exotic to foreigners, though I'm sure a lot of them were disappointed by whatever they found, and no doubt many charlatans selling enlightenment seeking money from wealthy American kids

I remember there was a documentary Louis Theroux did in the late 90s on the subject of westerners going to india in search of spirituality/enlightenment where he met Amma and some other gurus. But they already changed his appearance once (see leaked promo materials and shots), they're not gonna do it AGAIN. Plus, doin so would be equivalent to admittin they were wrong about somethin, which they ain't gonna do.

I'm gonna estimate there's probably fifty to sixty minutes total with Sonic onscreen, so reinsertin a new model an improved face could be a lot of work, plus you'd have to hire more people and pay them overtime to crunch on it so it's on time, so I'd say that's at least another several million bucks to the budget.
