The fur is the least of Sonic's problems. The big issues is, that the character design is horrible. It's a prime example of a failed attempt at turning a cartoon character into more realistic one.
The face features are creepy and the character isn't helped one bit by the oddly human like proportions of his body.

With Pikachu they stayed pretty much faithful to the cartoon when designing him, he looks axctly like a real pikachu would look like. Sonic looks like a malnourished japanese man and his fur looks much more plasticy than pikachu, who looks fluffy
