Part of what makes Shakespeare great is the openness to interpretation his characters hold. Lear could have been driven mad by any number of things, etc. Movies and plays have been made out of lesser Shakespeare characters before (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead being the chief example). Some great works of experiential theater have also come out of Shakespeare (Sleep No More). Harold Bloom called Shakespeare "The Inventor of the Human" because the depth of his characterization fully realizes even minor characters like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, let alone a major character like Ophelia. Also Ophelia is perfectly placed in a power struggle between men, which as much as we may or may not like it is considered a #relevant narrative
