I just finished the series and it was amazing. The art design, music, and even the animation seemed way too high a quality for a tv show. The story was pretty interesting as well though I don't seem to have understood most of its themes.
Why did everyone here say this was overrated?
It is a good production. There is nothing in particular to understand about it. "You can never understand muh depression" lonely and horny virgins want to pass it as super deep high art. That is all.
Because everyone here is either shitposting or contrarian.
whats this angel from some vn or scapped episode? Im going to guess its some scapped promoart
why did japan stop drawing like that
It's probably from one of the new movies.
looks like a digimon
>"You can never understand muh depression" lonely and horny virgins want to pass it as super deep high art.
Not really? I was under the impression that the main character was so depressed that he lost all hope of connecting with people and having a good relationship and was lashing out by saying "nobody understands me" while other characters kind of did his issues but couldn't get through to him.
I don't see what this has to do with my post.
Mecha is dogshit, might as well just watch the giant robot fights in power rangers and youll enjoy it more
I don't remember seeing that angel in the show or EoE
They didn't, the anime market was flooded with derivative Eva shows for a decade after it came out.
Robot has never recovered.
It means the show didn't treat depression like it's something one can't understand.
Oops meant for this
>being this much of an absolute brainlet
It did not. It's fans do because they can't comprehend why someone would think that the show that appeals so much to them is not the greatest masterpiece ever.
Looks like it's fan art.
Don't let dumb fans ruin your opinion of the show then. It's a great show, don't know if I would call it a masterpiece but it was high quality from beginning to the end. They knew when to end the show.
>DUDE SYMBOLISM
Yep that's definitely fan art. Apparently it won some award from gainax contest.
The show is solid and has good direction, sound and visuals but I can't say I like it overall so I can't say that its fans have ruined my impression of it. It's just that its the type of show that many viewers base their identity on so they tend to be sensitive to any sort of criticism. Part of the backlash is due to this and part of it is because most of the audience would not identify with this kind of show in the first place.
>Part of the backlash is due to this and part of it is because most of the audience would not identify with this kind of show in the first place
You know I generally wouldn't say that the inability of the majority of the general audience to identify with this show to be a mark against it or any show for that matter. Considering the kind of stuff that resonates with a large audience is IMO much more vapid than this.(the top 10 grossing movies are a good example, even the continued popularity of GOT to an extent).
Again, I am not sure what that has to do with my post. I was not trying to justify anyone's viewpoint.
You asked why people say that the show is overrated. People have the bias to overestimate what they identify with and underestimate what they don't identify with. I was just trying to give you both sides of the story. Yes, Eva is underestimated but it is overestimated too.
So it sucks?
Evangelion is just as good as its most rabid fans believe, but for different reasons. The psychological elements to the story that concern Shinji, Asuka and so on are very well explored considering the story is told in the format of a children's cartoon (a risque one, but a children's cartoon nevertheless). But what's even more interesting, if you are the kind of person who finds the deep lore of SF interesting, are the thematic links between the mental states of the human characters in the story and the "alien-ness" of the Angels themselves, an almost incomprehensibly different form of life to mankind. It's difficult to explain for me right now as I'm phoneposting, but the last episode of the TV show (NOT the EoE movie) crystallised these themes, most notably in the sketch art sequence where Shinji is reduced to nothing, then a body in space, and briefly depicted as a sort of MC Escher fish-shape. I shall have to post my monograph on the subject here another time.
Oh now I get what you meant.
I was told EoE is the true ending. So what was the original authors view?
go back
go back
go back
The ending of the TV show can be said to take place within the Human Instrumentality portion of EoE, so I guess both are?
