One of the biggest running issues of movie Danvers is they gave her powers set to 11 simply so they can call her "the most powerful character in the MCU". Danvers, in the comics, continually seeks to become better and stronger so her powers go through a series of upgrades over the last like 40 years or so. Mar-Vell, a Kree scientist that fled her homeworld and was creating a hyperspace machine on Earth so the Skrulls could escape the Kree military but the aircraft that was carrying it was shot down by Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) and he killed Mar-Vell. Carol was with Mar-Vell in that ship and she told her to blow up the machine so that the Kree wouldn't get their hands on it. She shoots the machine and it blows up right in her face giving her super powers. It is later revealed that the hyperspace machine was made using the Tesseract.
