VCR

What was it like using this machine?

Attached: vcr2.jpg (700x466, 100K)

Sucks, CDs were meh and DVDs were GODs

Better than DVD, I remember the early days of DVD where if you got a speck on the DVD the film would stop every five seconds. what a nightmare that was

painfully slow, also media storage was an issue

pretty good. you could easily rewind and pause tv which at that time was a novel thing. so that meant you could pause to pee or pause to look at 80s boobs.

Everyone had a rewinder too. Plus it was early DIY since everyone had a few tapes of TV gold they had recorded and kept archived- old racist looney toons, old superbowls, historical newscasts, etc.

People just don't make archival copies of things anymore now that they have a cloud based dvr with limited space.

>What was it like using this machine?
Great at the time because that's all we knew.

Everyone fucking hated it.
Piece of shit hollow plastic garbage, rewinding tapes, breaking the VHS tapes, tapes getting mangled, all of that resulting in absolute shitty quality aswell. It was working so bad that everyone had their own voodoo gimmick trick to "fix it" by blowing into it, shaking it in a particular manner, opening up the VHS box and blowing on the tapes etc

Only absolute nostalgiacuck ridden boomers look fondly on it.

You have it way better today and it's mostly nostalgia for those who prefer the more tactile experience VHS had.

More of a DVD guy.

VHS was top tier boomer tech.

I had the Mewtwo movie on VHS as a kid, and I played that shit till the tape died.

this had everything to do with you poorfag owning a $50 dvd player and nothing with the disc itself. just admit that you bought bottom of the barrel trash because you are a cheapfag/poorfag or even WORSE a complete subhuman who throws his discs around like his cum crusted socks, scratching them, leaving specks of dirt and your fatass disgusting fatty fat fingerprints on them.

Took forever to rewind

Shooting on Super 8 seemed dope though, I'm pissed I missed that era.

My homie shot a full Smashing Pumpkins doc on super 8 and basically was just chilling with them. Back in the day if you just got film exposed you were a "photographer" because everyone was too lazy / didn't want to pay to get film exposed. Now we're all free photographers. Lame.

The best
>longest lasting storage
> no entropy

Magnetic storage is superior for reading data aka watching kino, unchanged.

When they'd broadcast a movie or TV show you wanted to record you had to race down to the TV every ad break to stop and start the recording

>tfw you wore out your favorite vhs tape

Attached: Kornheiser_Why.jpg (288x499, 24K)

How long did it take for people to learn how to handle discs properly?

Attached: img_022912.jpg (1296x968, 721K)

There is nothing more kino than watching old wedding tapes.

There's nothing wrong holding disc like that retard, the plastic cover around it protects the inside.

They were not of proper quality either.
You can take CDs of today and hold them however you want with your fingers and they'll still play.

The tapes kept getting ruined with fungus. My dad would tape a lot of movies that aired on TV

My family had a Ford Expedition with the 3rd Row, like an Eddie Bauer or whatever and we had one of those like 12 inch tube TVs with the built-in VCR in it and I vaguely remember Rookie of the Year got caught in the VHS machine so we legit watched Rookie of the year over and over again from FL to North Carolina and back lol .

Attached: ROOKIE_OF_THE_YEAR_1_758_426_81_s_c1.jpg (758x426, 68K)

Remember movies had some trailers on it and that video piracy warning.

when it comes to discs most people remain absolutely subhuman. see for reference.

It was absolutely based as fuck, as were the 90s in general.

t. brainlet

This, also required a lot of maintenance, and VHS tapes degraded with time.

But comparing it to the standards of today doesn't do it justice, the jump from VHS to digital and solid state is like the jump from bows to semi automatic fire arms, except bows aren't completely obsolete.

fucking pain in the ass. Especially after you learned to nigger rig tapes by..I forget if you had to break OFF the tape covering the little black spot or put it on, but then you could put 2 VCRs together and copy. so when you had a prono, all your 10 year old friends in 6th grade would torture you to make them a copy if they brought a tape.
You could also tape a radio show using the audio outlet onto a VCR tape, which was nice before howard stern became a selll-out cuckold...

I'm so glad I was able to see so much change from the 90s to now. I feel like technology and the internet have stabilized by now.

when you finished jerking it to your dads porno's you had to rewind it back to the same numbers

Grainy pictures

Loud noises

You truly only know the good days when they're gone.

Couple of guys from school are making weekly VHS parties, they're really cool, we all bring some old tapes our parents grew up with and we watch all this 90s garbage, really funny.
Unlike our digital age these things had soul and were definitely better than modern streaming, just like cassettes and vinyls (those black plastic music records) are better than Spotify for real music connoisseurs

>I feel like technology and the internet have stabilized by now.
Don't worry, given what's about to happen in the EU and UK, pretty soon every fucker will have to log into every site with REAL NAME. when I first told brits to fight like hell against may and her "Buy a card and show ID to watch porn," i told them: "Don't you understand? They have to cross reference it with a number off your OD so they can track you, or else one person could just buy one card and number and everyone could use it. Fight them like you life depends on this!"
"lol, shizo! Wheeze's your tinfoil hat, schizo! fuck off!" And now here we are, the "White Paper" on what they plan to do is already out. You're fucked, and you deserve it...

Vinyl has some qualities, but VHS and cassettes are absolute plastic garbage for nostalgiacuck ridden boomers.

The best vcr were the ones with a dial that let you Rewind/Fast Foward at different speeds.

Attached: s-l300.jpg (300x198, 7K)

they just ended up eating up the tapes in the long run

that horrid sound of the tape being beyond mangled at a high speed

Oh, ad for the EU, article 13 is just the "camel's nose under the tent" so to speak. And if you ever really thought the Jews cared about your "morality" or "we have to protect the kiddies from porn!" the fucking jews are the biggest producers of porn and corrupters of youth on this planet! I wanted all the brits I could, and not one took me seriously. AND brits will have th follow EU laws for christ knows how long, so article 13 too for the UK...plus the Austrian pan to track EVERYONE with real name and ID...

LMAOOOOOOOO

But fast forwarding in slow motion was great.

They will track everything user, everything, online and IRL, every oppressive regime is doing it, your 1st world overlords will do it too, in the name of justice, freedom, fighting the bad guys or some other bullshit.

Never had a fucking dial, you must have had more shekels that my family. Just the one you could press the button 2x or 3 x to make it go faster.

at my parent's home, we have a library filled with VHS
It was great because you could tape everything from tv, so it was bootlegging-at-home, for you own personal use. Also, a VHS collection looked far more impressive than these slim ass thin BR packaging.
now half of them is unwatchable, but also
>this
my parents have all my videos of when I was a kid, and to watch them we had this VHS converter sort of thing

now everything it's pretty easy to find/have, it really makes you think about all the shit we take for granted nowadays

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but they are. If anyone has rook, start randomly talking aloud right now about...IDK, fucking "thai food," something you never usually talk about. Then, if you leave your rook on to where the billboard is going, watch as "thai food restaurant" ads come up on your roku...in my case, I KNOW it's my goddam router, people have found spy chip in it, and there's no way to take it out without breaking it...

>it really makes you think about all the shit we take for granted nowadays
well, everything on Jewtube we're soon to lose. I used to think how dumb I was for taping my fav cartoons as a kid since they were all on jewtube...now they're all gone again, or in the process of...

>has rook
* ROKU. you a also try on your computer if you have a Tv on now, beach for a weird genre of movies you never have before, and watch the ads come up suddenly..

Based.

if you had 2 VCR's you could dubb any rented movie just by running the output cable into the other one, then you could run the output from that one to the TV and watch it at the same time.
you could dubb over any tape just by stuffing something into the write protect hole.
also taking the VCR apart and cleaning the spinning head with an alcohol soaked cotton bud was pretty cool for a young boy like me and it made the picture nice and clear again

>Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not
Not at all dude, everyone will be profiled, from where you live and what you drive, to what you eat and buy, where you go, and how much time you spend there, all your habits, and that's not even touching the advertisers and how much google and facebook know about you at all times, that's just the government tightening it's grip on the population.

It's a nice memory desu, always liked renting videos and stuff. But of course we are way better off now

You know you didn’t have to buy those vcr tapes to record things. I would use movies I fucking hated and record ufc fights and porn. I hated the movie big green so I got some paper, put in the 2 little squares at the bottom of the tape and start recording whatever I wanted

i collect a lot of VHS, sure the quality isnt amazing but im a big fan of the Feel, Since i use to watch them as a kid its very nostalgic and just has more feelings. Also star trek has a lot better colors on VHS

Those goodwill type stores have good vhs movies

I miss the big mechanical thud when top loading ones popped open, that's all.

Go to your local Goodwill its remarkable what you can find. I have a good chunk of some of my favorite shows. also Ebay is a great place to find VHS for sale

>the my sister had a favorite Barney tape she watches all the time
>one day sick from school I put it in the vcr and hit record
>she comes home and puts tape on

>she now can see me win the Royal Rumble as Razor Ramon on her Barney tape

>watching TV
>want to record something
>pop a tape in and press record
>itjustwerks.txt
>run out of storage? easy, just go to any corner store or walmart and buy more tapes

I dumped FB very early, since I simply asked myself "how are they worth billions and billions when they don't have many ads? What the fuck are they selling? what CAN the sell, other than YOU and your fucking data?" Even VPN and tor aren't enough, so went into "Tor with Tails," taking me 20 mins to start it up and turn it off each day...

Oh boy it was kino, I legit feel sorry for zoomers who grew up without this amazing technology

Top kek

I recorded myself finishing link to the past and gave the tape to my friend so he can know how to pass the game.

fuck off zOOmer

Dude, you'd do better to get a cheap Pc at goodwill, change some of shit and then fucking pirate it. Also, get an apple TV...I think it's model 2, the one I have, where you can still get every movie, even ones still in theaters... those fuckers sell for like 400 on eat now when I only paid $100, wish I bought a bunch of them...

>It was working so bad that everyone had their own voodoo gimmick trick to "fix it" by blowing into it, shaking it in a particular manner, opening up the VHS box and blowing on the tapes etc
Lol wtf even is this post. Sounds like some bullshit you just made up. I've used VCRs since I was a kid in the 90s and still do to convert old home movies to digital. Only issues would be a dirty head and then you would just pop in a head cleaner. I've never had to blow in it or on the tape or whatever. What would that even do? Are you confusing VHS tapes with Nintendo cartridges?

yeah i get a lot of my collection from goodwill

The cheaper ones where always REGION FREE faggot

kinda annoying cause many tapes didn't work well like a scratched disc from the rental store

i have a laptop that i pirate movies on, the collecting is more of a hobby, its just my preference. obviously there's stuff i cant get on vhs (namely porn) and i use my laptop for that

>hoping the blank tape you found was porn

Nigga explain? Change what? How do watch a bunch of movie on Apple TV?

Once, near the beginning of the BD years, I found a forgotten TV, VCR and the VHS collection. I assembled them and watched five of them, including a version of 1984.

The feeling of paper casing for the VHS felt strange as I was used to the plastic casing of DVD. But you can see they were meant to be read. There were some information such as address etc on the casing, which I guess they stopped printing on DVD casing.

The viewing experience was great but I felt an urge to use the chapter menu

just look it up. You don't "change" anything, there's an app, they blocked it in the 3rd edition, where you can nigger-rig everything, even ones still in theaters.

>that tape you friend accidentally let you borrow thinking it judge dredd but it was actually a porno of his parents having sex

I fapped 3 times day in the summer of 97

why would you fap to some greasy, overweight boomers?

you only get like..I think it's a 780 pic quality, but I guess it's worth it if you care that much about films. I can get most of the on screener off a family member if I really want to see, but hasn't been anything in a very long time I've fucking cared about..

Using old tech felt like you were some sort of epic hackerman. Now you just have a smartphone.

I have told it couple of times and I tell it once again.

One day I was amazed that the CD player on my car can play VCD. The end.

"Live" rewinds were kinda fun guess.

Good times.

It was based how you could have one VHS tape that could hold a variety of footage from home movies to a tv show to movies to last nights game. And it could play on any VCR cause everyone had one. Now you have all these shitty little memory cards with files in different formats that you have to figure out how to put on the tv every time. Or DVR footage that only stays on your DVR and you can't take it to a buddies house. VHS had it's drawbacks but were better in it's simplicity.

How come you can't rewind with disks?

weird that the son had the tape though

>tfw feeling like a hacker when i managed to open the flappy lid of VHS cassettes by pushing the little black square button just beside the hinge

I guess his dad taped over the movie.

this pic makes me want to have kids just so i can see them experience fun times like this

Oh,TTW, just got a pricey as fuck DVD player today ($400). Don't recall what happened to last one, think one of my brothers stole it. But if you have 4k roku the fuckign picture now had NO FUCKING DIFFERENCE, you pay as well use your xbox. IT used to look so fuckign different compared to regular TV, now just trash. Think you need an OLED to really get the benefit of it...

Don't know when it started but rented tapes started having copyright protection that would distort the image when dubbed to any other VHS.

mother fucker, for same price could have had a new PS 4 pro, the VR, and a few games. Stupid waste. Maybe I just haven't seen the good ones yet...

>$400 dvd player
i don't think what you bought was actually a DVD player

>i don't think what you bought was actually a DVD player
well, came in a box that identifies as a DVD player. Maybe it also does DVR recording, haven't looked into it yet, haven't had the time...originally was planning to buy it at same time as OLED, but their first available delivery was early June, so I said fuck it and cancelled them...

mom yelling that dust killed everything, so you blow into the VCR to let the boogeyman dustboi out

Based and redpilled

My dad knew the sound of the VCR player starting in his sleep. Every time I'd try to watch a tape, I'd hear him waking up upstairs.

>had ancient TV that only had rf
>would use the vcr to play consoles that only used composite
>had to pop a tape in and out for some reason each time

they were a pain in the ass but I liked not having a main menu that looped the same short track if someone fell asleep while watching a dvd

Not as bad as people would have you think. I personally love VHS for the level of analog control you have over everything. No digital interfaces no logins, no forced menu animations or trailers, and it's literally quicker to pop a tape in and start it than it is to boot up Netflix and search for shit.

Video quality was not nearly as bad as people made it out to be. If it was bad, it was because of a worn/damaged tape, or a shitty VCR with bad tracking. Plus, a lot of people's final memories of VHS tapes are watching in the early 2000s, by which point most VCRs were poorly made shit and most tapes were worn the fuck out, and they were probably feeding the signal into an LCD/flatscreen which was digitally upscaling it and making it look a thousand times worse.

Audio quality was fantastic, ever since Hi-Fi stereo became standard in the early '80s, but people generally don't know shit about audio today because they use awful built in speakers or cheap soundbars from Wal-Mart. Most people don't have sound setups that would even use Hi-Fi stereo at it's maximum potential, never mind 5.1 digital surround.

I've always been a stickler for video quality, even when I was a teenager, but lately I've gotten back into watching old VHS tapes for shits, and I'm impressed by how clean they look witht he proper equipment. I've done side-by-side comparisons, and apart from a little fuzziness, they can easily approach DVD-quality. A bonus effect is that the slight analog haze often serves to better homogenize special effects and composite shots. Many of these old movies were never really meant to be seen in HD.

Attached: 1552169991406.jpg (1048x1161, 139K)

>that feel when your VCR had automatic rewind feature

>had to pop a tape in and out for some reason each time
I remember feeling like a fucking genius for figuring this out on Christmas morning when I was trying to hook up my N64. I always had to press play on the tape in the machine for a second to put the VCR into "ready" mode, so a grand majority of my time playing Nintendo was always prefaced by a split second of my mom's stories.

That's not how VCRs worked, you fucking zoomer.

Recco's Lenyendo was REGION FREE you dumbass

I was born in the mid 80s, shitty millenial, and yes, I remember one vhs being like that.

There were no fifty dollar dvd players in the early days of dvd. You're thinking later.

>TFW you push the video in faster than the receiving mechanism takes it because you can't wait for your kino.

Then it was like that for another reason. Adjusting the volume on the TV has nothing to do with the volume of the source being recorded. VCRs could record stuff with the TV completely off, or with no fucking TV at all, you mongoloid. If you had a tape where the volume changed, it was because of an issue with the tape itself, or the audio mixing on the cable broadcast.

>tfw the tape refuses to eject one day

seems we all did this lol
btw its funny you post that actress, i bougth a porn movie from a friend at like 15 years old ,it was a dorcel movie with her ,internet wasnt rly a thing at that time ,so you had to fap to the same tape for years lol

I still keep one because there's a lot of shot-on video movies that have yet to receive a DVD/digital release. It's more of a hassle than DVDs, but kinda comfy to watch as well.

Quality varies, storage plays a huge part as well. I have VHS tapes from the 80s that look top notch and ones recorded in the 2000s that look like shit.

Also, a lot of tapes released in the US have terrible pan-and-scan issues to the point that they're missing 50% of the original image.

Zoomer scum

you didnt miss anything its just that it happened a while ago and people only remember the good things.

>tfw you always had shitty televisions and VCRs so you don't know that feel
>tfw screen was on the dim side so dark scenes were hard to watch at times

>Everyone had a rewinder too.
This is not true. Only spergs and video stores had rewinders.

Attached: 1486226372817[2].png (478x603, 279K)

Terrible.
Beta was good but died out
Digital hd cassettes never took off due to decoder costs
Hddvd streaming and blurays won
Only scratched divx/vcd and DVDs where worse.
Blurays are almost unkillable
Fuck off I had a 2000dollar pc with a top of the line drive and DVD decoder card as well back in 98
The drives and error correction where dogshit plus the DVDs got bit rot and damage even if they looked pristine

based

When I was in high school my parents had pirated satellite TV, so on the weekends I would tape softcore porn and sell the tapes to my classmates.

no, it could happen. It wasn't the volume control on the tv, but certain cable boxes could have the volume adjusted (if you used the cable remote) and it would record that way.

My dad's boss was a friend of the family, and his oldest son had a dual VCR and TV setup that I still remember being in awe of when I saw it. He used to make bootleg tapes for us all the time, he'd even type up his own labels and cut out movie synopses from his video catalogs. Pic related was one of my favorite bootleg double features as a kid. Found it at my parents' house a few weeks ago.

>tfw screen was on the dim side so dark scenes were hard to watch at times
Even the shittiest TVs had brightness settings, you know.

here

When I used the satellite remote to control the volume, it affected the audio on the tape, because that was the direct source (the graphic of the volume control appeared superimposed on the taped version as well). Changing the volume on the TV itself didn't affect the recorded version, obviously. user might have had a similar setup.

>>That kino friend who had two VCRs who you would get to dub all the movies.

except when they were write protected.

Yes thats what I was talking about, it was the satellite remote control.

Borrowed my friends moms The Godfather trilogy on vhs. My VCR ate the first tape. Good times.

Yeah, quality difference really isn't that huge with proper equipment. Slightly offset colors were the most obvious. A lot of early DVDs for certain genre movies (horror and monster movies especially) were actually just straight-up copies from VHS.

>A lot of early DVDs for certain genre movies (horror and monster movies especially) were actually just straight-up copies from VHS.
Very true. And alternatively if you have a copy of a movie on VHS that was released concurrently with a remastered DVD (like the early 2000s copies of Back To The Future or whatever), they benefited even more from using the improved remasters. Much of the low-quality video we remember from our youths was more the symptom of a crummy source than it was the technology.

I've got copies of Indiana Jones from their original '80s releases, and then from the "Complete Adventures of Indiana Jones" remasters in 1999. The difference is staggering.

I taped the entire Babylon 5 series off of the TV in the 90's. I wish they would re-do the CGI and issue a Bluray.

Attached: 1519076722521.jpg (326x294, 47K)

loud and smelly

Enjoyable because having a home theater and being able to watch your favorites is great.

However, being a analogue magnetic tape format brought a ton of issues will long term endurance and storage. Tapes literally degrade slowly due to the Earth's magnetic field. Plus the very easy wear and tear they would pick up from use.

It was fine. Same as a dvd, except you had to rewind/flahsforward. I'd a different machine for that.

>be 12
>brother is 16
>comes into my room to ask if he can borrow VCR for "tape he has to watch for school" or something

>just take it back and reconnect it
>he left his tape in
>hit play
>some shitty bootleg porn tape with fat chicks
This is how I know my brother and I have the same fetish. Wonder if it's genetic.
