Only because of the hype. Like most popular media, NPC's will go out in droves to immerse themselves in whatever is popular at the time. In this case, that would be Marvel movies. If Marvel movies weren't such a meme, a lot less people would ever bother watching them. So it's not really a good indicator of quality at all.

it's the finisher of a series of 22 fucking movies, you could end up watching it going from other ones to it, or watch just the avengers movies, the interconnectedness of them increases it's exposure. there are multiple ways towards it and reasons to watch it. people will come to it again, and if not again, come to watch it because it's a part of a bigger cultural thing, be it comics, superheroes, action movies
whereas avatar, watch it once and never return. it's not connected to anything, there's no cultural impact or significance. you probably wouldn't even come to watch it now because it just doesn't matter
