there's a night king in the books, but it's someone who existed long before the events in the book. i can't remember much, but i think he was a lord commander of the night's watch who married an Other.
Yes the Night King was the 13th Lord Commander of The Nights Watch that sold the watch out for a female Other or maybe an undead wight he had a bomer for.
The Night King of the show is poorly written fanfiction based on glossing over the wiki in 5 seconds. It could be suggested that he's meant to be "The Great Other" who is R'Hollor's eternal enemy but there are no other Gods made manifest on Westeros.
