Subverting expectations for shock value is the laziest device a writer can use. It takes skill and care to subtly foreshadow a plot line using symbolism and character building. It arguably takes even more skill to pivot to an unexpected yet logical and symbolically meaningful outcome that still doesn’t make the events that preceded the event feel like a waste of time. Even if the twist is done right, it should be used sparingly or the audience will constantly expect it which cheapens the narrative as it unfolds. Rian and the Dabids accomplished neither. They did the equivalent of building a sandcastle then knocking it over. It’s the easy and lazy way out.
