The movie's marketing was regrettably poor and did little to sell people on the movie and the merits of Alita's big eyes

I'd say it's objectively a 7.5 to 8.5 out of 10 movie - so it's not perfect. But there' something about the very compact world-building and compelling characters that makes it so fun to discuss and watch. It's a labor of love that's been in development for 20 years, and it shows.
Also there's the meta-narrative of this being a movie made by a producer who many in Hollywood hate, and that many in the garbage tier entertainment wanted to fail because it wasn't "her turn".

my only issue is the movie isn't long enough. I like and prefer Cam's tight pacing as I think it adds to rewatchability but I feel like an extra 20 or 30 mins would've fleshed things out more and wouldn't have slowed down the momentum of the movie.

No there isn't. What you define as good in a film is entirely in the eye of the beholder, and any standards one might have about a film, that again is not at all provable by any scientific measurement or agreed upon standard. The only thing that exists is consensus.

Right, and that can be observed and pointed out for sure. Now whether or not those things are definable "bad" is entirely up to the person viewing it.

When looking at the craftmanship that went into it, from the story structure to the effects, the consistency and clarity of the actions scenes, the sound quality, etc. without bringing into it if you personally liked the characters, music etc. There are purely objective things like the absence of audio pops, the absence of unexplained characters, and so on. When I said objectively, I meant when looking at it as dispassionately as I can. Otherwise there's nothing wrong with liking bad movies - if people say that Sharknado was 10/10 I'd have to disagree, but if they say it was 10/10 "for them" (subjectively), I'll accept that.

Alita is subjectively and objectively an 8/10, but I don't think a mere rating encompasses how much I appreciate the movie for what it is; you can't compute or assign a value to healing

And let me just follow up by saying, the only thing that can be used to gauge a standard for film is to look at what a consensus agrees upon, like what a collection of people say about a movie and how it tells it's story and does it's techniques. That's called consensus good. Objectivity implies it's truth, something that is beyond us and exists as a functional truth in the universe, which is not true.

There was a guy on Twitter (ST) who was able to book tickets to Alita Imax, but when he talked to the theater manager they were puzzled and wondered if it was a booking mistake and they would check with the theater chain to see if it was legit. I haven't seen any replies to that.

If the re-release is happening, it's totally the result of Cameron demanding it. He's the one who pushed for early screenings before the movie came out.

Troublemaker is actually incorporated in Texas, and the movie was shot there, but with Lightstorm and 20th Century both being in California, an argument could be made for both states to have diversity jurisdiction over such a matter. It's not like the jury pool would make much of a difference, and if something like that actually happened, they would be fucked regardless of venue.

If even just two people who work for Marvel/Disney/Fox, even just on a temporary contract, agreed to talk down Alita to help Captain Marvel, then Disney might be on the hook for that if it happened. Cameron and Co. wouldn't even need to sue - they could just privately threaten a lawsuit or exercising some contract clause.
A film reviewer working for a Disney-owned company writing a negative review is not any sort of violation, but if two of those geniuses on Twitter who sometimes write for Marvel exchanged a single Discord message about "let's attack Alita" - big oof. Wouldn't matter if Disney's corporate lawyers didn't know about or sanction the behavior - if promoting creative works online is part of their job then Disney is on the hook through vicarious liability.

In Alita's case, the movie came out at a bad time. Unfortunately, just sandwiched between other films, it had to be pushed back to February, and then because of the Fox merger, the studio didn't put much into marketing, except for overseas. Cameron had to take it upon himself to do the early free screenings to help generate word of mouth.

We're not talking about conspiracy theories here. I'm not thinking about a big board room full of cackling Disney execs or anything like that.

you have the various venues: online purchase, online rental, physical purchase, physical rental, etc. There’s a strategy to these releases, just as there’s a strategy to the initial release. They can’t release these too close to the time the original film is leaving the theater, or they’ll miss the chance of getting you to double-buy, as some will just wait for the disc (of course, some will anyway). So there’s a built-in 3–6 months or so delay. After that, there’s another strategic timing for the release — when should it hit stores, online/cable purchase, etc.

If the online/cable purchase and DVD/BD sales date is the same, you may well see it online first, as there’s physical time needed distribute or even produce the physical medium, depending on how that’s done. Often, the director gets more control over a DVD or BD release, based on contractual issues, and may take a little while longer getting together extra material. Or simply, Comcast or Verizon or someone paid extra to get it first.

And of course, after pay, there’s rental/PPV and premium channel distibution…. unless of course, that happened first. Some films will hit one venue before another based on distribution deals.

People speculated that it had something to do with the trademark lawsuit in California, but I highly doubt that. Those people - while they have a registered trademark - have been using the Battle Angel mark for far shorter than Viz Media etc. have. And if it was true, then they would have stopped the Funko Pops and the Mini Epics sales before they stopped the BD/DVD release.

Idk what algorithm they use, but I would think that because Alita saw such a huge rise in such a small amount of time, that boosted her up to #1, however as time goes by and the "hype" the rankings mellow out to where they should be. But it does seem a bit low atm.

The position heavily influenced by reranks. This is a personal rank you make once you have an account. Alita had 600+ reranks placing her at #1, now if you check it Alita has 3 reranks at #1. So they have deleted all the reranks that placed her high, thats why she qas #1 while having less votes than Godfather. Its their system so they can't complain about it.
