Cut to season 8. Night King. The main villain. The big bad guy. The Great War. Well guess what? He's not a main villain. He dies. Cersei is the main villain and Euron with his big cock.

This show has REPEATEDLY trying to tell everyone it's not LOTR. This whole show, the whole theme is subverting your expectations.

That is without a doubt, the most incredible thing I've ever witnessed in film or television. The entire episode. The music. The cinematography. The suspense. I am seriously speechless. This is on the same level as LoTR. The beginning with the flame swords and the charge...the slow dim of the flame in the distance, that set the tone for the rest of the episode.

The episode was actually really well done - hearing the dead from the crypts really added to the satisfaction of realizing how pointless even trying to fight them truly was.

Honestly they should have lost - that would have been the realistic ending. I don't even really care about Arya coming out of nowhere and stabbing the night king - it was implemented poorly into the show and really discredits a lot of the earlier writing and previous foreshadowing.

I'm honestly most upset about the fact that A) They won and B) Barely anybody of importance died business as usual. It's the fact you could probably skip out on this entire episode and continue watching the show without really losing anything from it

The ending destroyed the episode. Now we got 3 episodes of basically non importance because the only interesting plotline the show had left is gone.

Executive producer is frankly just a title at this point, and GRRM said years back he was stepping away from the show to focus on finishing the books (whether that worked is up for debate, but he did stop writing for the show and doesn't visit the set anymore). He said that he hasn't even seen season 8 nor does he know what happens. He said he has only a few ideas on how it will play out based on a conversation he and D&D had years ago.

>Gilly calls for everyone to escape

They also only send one volley of artillery. Then stopped and waited for the enemy to attack.

I mean, those are all amazing.
I just think the cinematography of this one was the peak of what they can do. The fight about the clouds, The Dragon/Nightking landing, The Dothraki getting eaten, That final run through the city as everything is burning down with that amazing musical piece.

That was unironically the plan to begin with going from the strategic battle map from episode 2.
It was painfully obvious HBO just needed to kill off the army to save on costs. A cavelry charge into an enemy which vastly outnumbers you and does not feel fear (Which is the primary effect of a shocktrooper) A literal moron could see that wouldn't work.

They also had it in front of the spear wall

and the walls were not manned before the battle and were only done so once the outside fell, when they could have had the unsullied with their spears which would be great for defending a wall up there

also the trench was 3 feet deep, and they just kind of aimlessly stood in the courtyard instead of falling back and regrouping in a defensible position

his whole dilemna in the books was being torn between knowing what is right, and acting like the monster everyone treated him as.
the books had him treat shae like garbage most of the time —he occasionally felt bad about it — and he killed her in cold blood, not in self defense.
he had a bard murdered and made into stew for a threat
he lied to jaime when he was released and said that he did kill joffery out of spite, and only joined up with dany so he could kill jaime and rape cersei in his words
the show boils him down to a smart hero with a dry wit who proves people wrong — which is perfectly fine in its own right — but now it's abandoned that so tyrion can be one-upped by everyone around him for stupid reasons.
it's the one-two punch of absolute garbage
