There are all the quotes about how he can't sit idly by and let bad things happen, If you need me I'll be there, the guy who wanted a normal life went into the ice and someone else came out, etc. Plus there are all the side things against his character, Captain America being a "man out of time" has always been a significant portion of his character in every incarnation, sending him back just feels like the absolute cheapest possible way to send him off because Evans was out.

Rhodey wasn't trying to BECOME Iron Man or REPLACE Iron Man, he was his own separate character War Machine. They weren't trying to turn Iron Man black or force diversity, he's just a separate character who happens to be black.
