So happy I came to Yea Forums for the first time because of GOT. Didn't know these threads existed here. Saw Alita like 5 time, got the Pop! figures and t-shirts at the theater, never had such a fascination with a movie like this before. And it was a wholesome fascination too, nothing sexual... Everyone Hugo knows in his life, in Iron City, his friends, his doctor friend Ido. they're all emotionally drained, detached, and some downright broken people. Everyone going through the motions and not really expressing themselves emotionally and living freely, just awaiting the inevitable death that'll probably come for them. Alita coming in out of nowhere, so innocent and open to everything around her; his experiences with her is like the start of a new life almost. She has this fire, this passion that no one else does, no one has that love and drive she does, and he's there to witness most of it. She's not like anyone he's really been with in his whole life, so of course, it's more than just love he's saying that to her, he really means it. Her soul, her human nature is one of a kind, she has more human in her, a cyborg.

Hugo had to make a flashback. Maybe the story of a brother, albeit changed, without a balloon.
Or just a dialogue, "why do you have a scar on your arm? Oh, it's a long story. That's all that's left of an older brother. Oh, he also dreamed of Zalem. But he died. But I'm smarter"
But there are so many events in the film, and the arch of Hugo and his brother will take a lot of time.

The backstory with the brother is not important though. What matters is Hugo's corruption and how he gets redeemed by the end. His friends he has in Iron City are sort of the replacement for the brother backstory. Not everything has to be taken from the manga.
