Season 2 isn't as good as 1, but it's still great. They focus a lot more on the kids and relationships, but try to balance it with more fights. It all was led up nicely to a kino final episode though. The biggest problem is how characters still have flip flop attitudes (ie. I like you one second, the next you are fucking scum). The season definitely was used to develop the cast instead of focusing on the boomers. A lot of them are more likable because of it. Does start of a bit slow though, but it picks up pretty fast.

Johnny should’ve opened up his own karate dojo without the moniker Cobra Kai or any of Kreese’s motto. Daniel wouldn’t be worried that a whole new generation of out-of-control kids be created. Nor would Kreese worm his way back to it. And look at Johnny now.

I really feel sorry for Johnny. I dislike what the writers did with the whole “high school alpha bully” becomes a loser. It reeks of wish fulfillment from 80’s teens. And Johnny should’ve listened to what Bobby, Tommy, and Jimmy said about not trusting Kreese again; his own best buds.

I love how NPCs like to mimic that “Daniel was the bully” meme that gets peddled thanks to HIMYM. Daniel was a bit hot-headed but he was always a good guy. Remember in KK Part 2 where he rescued the little girl AND helped Miyagi save Sato’s life who in turn rebuilt Miyagi’s village? Daniel has more guts and decency than the autismos here in Yea Forums.

And my defense of Daniel doesn’t diminish my sympathy and empathy for Johnny. He lost his mom, his stepdad was a jerkass, and his father figure/mentor twisted him and later betrayed him as an adult. Not to mention losing his wife and son while drudging by a contractor.

Cobra Kai is a brutal reconstruction of how everything neatly resolves in 80’s movies. Daniel and Johnny still carry the history and scars from their respective pasts. In an ideal world, they would bury the hatchet and work against Kreese like how Miyagi and Sato did. Except Miyagi and Sato were once friends; Daniel and Johnny weren’t.

In fact, Johnny should’ve been informed of what went on in KK Part 3 with Kreese, Mike Barnes, and Terry Silver. This is why Daniel is so anti-Cobra Kai and is distrustful towards Johnny. We, as the audience have seen what’s happened to Daniel and now we see Johnny’s POV now. Season 3 should hopefully resolve the differences between both guys and their respective schools.

Even though Johnny and Daniel are in their 50’s, they’re mentally 30 years younger in Cobra Kai. The series likes to poke fun at today’s SJW infested climate and I think the writers are also pointing out what happens to 80’s movie teens when they age. In the 80’s as 50somethings, Johnny and Daniel wouldn’t even escalate to this kind of hostility and childish antics, but they’re still trapped in high school. They haven’t moved on despite being in the real world and fathering children. This is actually a brutal deconstruction of how everything resolves at the end of the movie between the protagonist and bully.

Hopefully, like Johnny mentioned in Season 1 how Apollo Creed and Rocky turned rivals into friends, Daniel and Johnny can be Rocky 3-level bros. Or not even friends but keep a respectful distance.

In another continuity, these 2 guys could’ve been friends. Both lost their dads as kids, moms had to do what they could for their sons, and both turned to martial arts and found a mentor figure. But instead Johnny’s life despite having access to luxury and all-American looks and big man on campus cred, his life was pretty shitty thanks to Sid being a douchewad and Kreese abusing him. Johnny never had an awesome adventure in Okinawa, meet a gorgeous Japanese girl, and fought a death match to save her.

Even Kreese and Miyagi are good studies and anti-thesis on how war affects a man. One dude fought for the US as cannon fodder while his wife was in an internment camp and died at childbirth alongside with his unborn son. Not to mention all the anti-Asian racism that Miyagi had to endure. Yet he never grew into a bitter asshole at the world and was kind yet brave.

You have another guy who went to war, fought against Asians and developed prejudices (remember calling Miyagi a slope?) and returned home. Kreese was probably bashed for being a baby-killer by hippies and he was disgusted how society treated veterans like him. Hence why Cobra Kai was formed with no mercy; it’s Kreese’s way of winning the war by toughening kids by training as if life was a war.

In another world just like Daniel and Johnny being bros, Kreese would respect and admire a Medal of Honor veteran who was also a karate practitioner. Maybe even be Miyagi’s student.

This is why the Karate Kid movies AND Cobra Kai are interesting because they actually put a lot of thought into Daniel/Miyagi and Johnny/Kreese as counterparts.

To be fair, Miyagi’s dojo was ransacked by Mike Barnes who was affiliated with Kreese in KK Part 3. The vintage car that Miyagi gave to Daniel for his birthday was spray painted with Cobra Kai on it as well as Miyagi’s Medal of Honor stolen? Can you REALLY blame Daniel that he believes Johnny was just faking reformation and in league with Kreese this whole time? Remember how Terry Silver acted like a good guy to Daniel and Miyagi to win their trust?

It IS petty about the tournament but remember it represents a moment in Daniel’s life where he got brutally injured just so that a gang wouldn’t terrorize him. And Miguel playing dirty against Robbie’s shoulder is history repeating itself like Daniel’s leg getting taken out.

And taking in Robbie is because Daniel actually likes the kid and sees himself in Robbie by being a Miyagi successor. Robbie came to him for ulterior motives originally, but eventually the 2 became master and student like Miyagi did for Daniel. And even as a surrogate father figure.

Both Daniel and Johnny are horribly flawed. I give both slack because we know most of the bad blood in Cobra Kai are due to extenuating circumstances and misunderstandings. That’s real life.

Kreese probably felt that the 60’s and 70’s teens that fought in Vietnam were soft. His form of training indoctrinated military discipline to eliminated any opposition. This is Kreese’s own way of never “losing Vietnam”. Remember how he admonished Johnny that the enemy doesn’t fight with honor in his war? It’s the same way as in life. His karate students will spread out and create more hardened people to enemies without mercy or scruples.

Be honest, how many high school guys who had problems with one another become friends years after graduation? You’d think people would let bygones be bygones and patch things up, but in reality, people aren’t as noble minded. Ideally we should all get along or at least keep our distance. I agree and disagree with this. It'd be a completely different show and that'd be fine. You can tell that they're really trying to find ways to keep them going back at each other's throats after every reconciliation, but that's actually part of the charm to me. All right I'm gonna talk about major season 2 ending spoilers, so don't click it even if you're curious.

I know you guys are genius that know all about tv tropes and can predict what comes next based on whats been presented, so:
did he die? Will he be on a wheelchair? I think both would be pretty brutal for a show thats been so light, so what you guys think? Also is the actor still on paying role or he doing something else? I think both he ded or in a wheelchair forever will kill the show, I would stop watching to be honest.

My guess is they play out the wheelchair drama for an episode, then do a physical therapy plot-line. Karate ends up getting him active again, so his mom forgives Johnny.

You don't need to spoiler it, we've been openly discussing Miguel's spine slushy since the season first aired.
Anyway he's 100% not dying. He's either going to be crippled for life or, the much more likely scenario, he's going to recover probably with the help of Ali. My guess is that he's going to recover enough to walk but not enough to fight. That way the injury actually has consequences without completely removing a character from the picture

That scene where Daniel san walks the beach and meet fake miyagi, then he tells not to seek the fish but wait for it to come coz it would, it hit me hard. Biggest problem with S2 is less Johnny and Miguel bro moments. Both characters are caught up with bullshit from their lives and it's kinda sad they didn't get enough time to hang out, do some private training or have Johnny do more father-son things with him.

Well that was one point of the season, so when Miguel falls from the stairs, you actually feel bad because those two never had enough time for each other.

Big budget movies aren’t worth it today. I grew up with comics and nowadays burnt out with cape flicks.

TV and streaming series are the superior medium. More time to develop stories and characters. And Cobra Kai is a labor of love. There’s so much respect and tribute to the original trilogy and Pat Morita from the writers and actors themselves. Macchio and Zabka were close to Morita and are enthusiastic about Cobra Kai.

I hope the days of big movie franchises are coming to an end and fun shows are back.

It's really great how Daniel's wife is the only sane character in the entire show. During the Mexican restaurant scene when she says Johnny and Daniel have a karate warring was excellent. It's basically a childish disput between two people. Same goes for Johnny's friends when they found out he's giving classes. "That's still a shit?"
Other than that all the other characters seem to live in a world where people don't know how to talk and resort first to coreographic fights and stupid drinking contests.

Terry Silver mentioned a South Korean instructor in Part 3 named Kim Sun Yung who trained Kreese. Koreans learned Japanese/Okinawan karate and blended it with Chinese and Korean styles. Hence why Johnny’s style is dynamic and flowing; it definitely has elements of Korean and Japanese.
