They were going to fight the NK. The battle with him was clearly coming in EP 3. What the fuck else was going to happen? White walkers introduced in episode 1, the show focuses on them being the ultimate threat, everything was built up for this inevitable conclusion to the series long conflict. The conflict of the show is the overarching biggest threat, that which has the highest stakes, which was the Night King and his army. The climax is the final fight with him. The fight with Cersei is falling action leading into the resolution.

I was almost positive we were going to get the Bran time travel ending where we see every character basically get killed off one by one until it's Bran, Theon, and the NK and his army. Theon delays the NK just a little bit longer. Arya jumps in and dies, but again, it delays the NK just a little longer and Bran then comes out of his warging and it turns out the whole time he was doing time travel shit and setting up pieces so that what we just saw never would come to pass. Instead we got what we got, but I'm completely baffled how anyone is still alive: Jon, Brienne, Sam, Tormund, Podrick, Grey Worm, all of them were totally surrounded and pinned to walls and shit for quite a long time...None of them should be alive. The Undead were shown to practically wash over their targets and kill them, but somehow all of these people are still standing? I knew we were in for some bad shit when the cavalry started charging into total darkness. All of the people I was watching it with just looked at each other and were like "do they even know what they're charging into?" It's disturbing that D&D had the audacity to compare that to Helm's Deep.

What was the point of anything? All the battle plans failed except for baiting the NK to come down and have a chat with Bran. What about the White walkers? Wights? Dragonglass? All the characters died anti-climatically for Arya yet she didn't have to sacrifice anything herself.
