The same could be said about Thor. He let half the universe die because he wanted to revel in his victory and make Thanos suffer for what he did to the Asgardians/Loki instead of just killing him. However, Starlord was different because this scene was part of a thematic narrative which was that only Thanos could choose his goals over his family/loved ones, which is why he deserved to win. If you want to hate someone for the deaths, hate Thor.
